GA-990XA-UD3 (rev. 1.x) won't boot from a PEX2IDE
« on: September 26, 2014, 06:15:27 pm »
I have one of these...

Product ID: PEX2IDE
Chipset ID: JMicron - JMB368
1 Port PCIe IDE Controller Adapter Card | IDE Controller Cards | StarTech.com
http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/IDE/1-Port-PCI-Express-IDE-Adapter-Card~PEX2IDE

...which is fully recognized by an Asus M5A88-V EVO and boots / works completely with an LG GH22LP20 LightScribe DVD burner:

Motherboards - M5A88-V EVO (BIOS ver. 1801, FX-8350)
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A88V_EVO/#specifications

However the PEX2IDE is not initially recognized by a GA-990XA-UD3 (rev. 1.x, BIOS F14d, I've tried ver. F13 and F14b as well) early in a boot and thus won't boot from a DVD (or a PATA HD which I tried also).

I've tried all available PCIe slots but the PEX2IDE is not being recognized in time to boot from it. Yet once the OS has loaded the PEX2IDE & LG GH22LP20 combo burns, mounts and labels blank DVDs just fine.

Question:

Does the GA-990XA-UD3 (rev. 1.x)'s BIOS setup have a hidden function which is the equivalent of the Asus' BIOS' "AddON ROM Display Mode [Force BIOS]" setting which forces the BIOS of add-in controller cards like the PEX2IDE to be loaded early in a boot?

Thank you.

Tap the F12 key when booting should take you to just a boot menu. Does it show there if so that would be a workaround.

Also •Backed by a StarTech.com lifetime warranty and free lifetime technical support. I would contact them. If it took any kind of driver to install it that could be why it isn't picking it up.  Also you can go into bios and look at boot order and see if it shows in there.

Also that ASUS board had a ide channel and that could be why it saw it. IDE is gone away on most boards now.

Yeah, I tried the F12 key etc in addition to searching the 'Net before posting this thread.

Since Startech doesn't have a firmware update on the PEX2IDE's product page, I sent the following e-mail to JMicron:

Hello.

I've got one of these...

Product ID: PEX2IDE
Chipset ID:    JMicron - JMB368
1 Port PCIe IDE Controller Adapter Card | IDE Controller Cards | StarTech.com
http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/IDE/1-Port-PCI-Express-IDE-Adapter-Card~PEX2IDE#dnlds

...which will boot OS DVDs via an LG GH22LP20 when the card is installed in one of these:

Motherboards - M5A88-V EVO
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A88V_EVO/#specifications

However the PEX2IDE won't boot DVDs (or a PATA HD) when it is installed in one of these (but otherwise functions correctly):

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3+ - GA-990XA-UD3 (rev. 1.x)
http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3901#ov

Thus a boot ROM update for the PEX2IDE's JMB368 may be helpful. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be one here:

Index of ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/SATA_Controller/Option_ROM/
ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/SATA_Controller/Option_ROM/

I tried the jmb363_1.07.24.zip because its release notes included this entry...

"1.06.65  a.Update JMB368 Bootrom class code to 0101".
ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/SATA_Controller/Option_ROM/release%20note.txt

...but unfortunately the jmb363_1.07.24 doesn't recognize the PEX2IDE as being a supported controller.

Question:

Is there an available boot ROM update specific to the JMB368?

Thank you.

John

Pending a response I've reverted back to the Asus 'board and am keeping the now up-to-date GA-990XA-UD3 (rev. 1.x) as a backup.
