GA-X58A-UD3R - several issues
« on: March 16, 2010, 09:34:32 pm »
Hi, I'm going to buy GA-X58A-UD3R and was searching for reviews on the Internet. I found several problems faced by buyers of this board. I would like to receive from professionals or advanced users a confirmation or refutation of these problems, as well as the possible causes of their appearance and their possible solutions.

1. High pitched noise described in several forums
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1493744&page=6
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=244186

2. The problem with connecting devices to the front audio panel
http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/ga-x58a-hda-header-hardware-issue-38556/

3. Question on the new Marvell 9128 SATA 3 controller - is it possible to use devices connected to it as bootable, including whether the RAID-0 array attached to the controller to be bootable. Which mode should I install for Marvell 9128 controller in BIOS - IDE or AHCI ? Do I need to install the Marvell 9128 controller driver during the initial Windows 7 64bit installation?

Yes I confirm with the audio issues. My front panel isn't working properly.

Yes I get the high-pitch noise problem, I posted the problem on this forum 2 weeks ago, but nobody commented on it. Is this a really rare problem with the motherboard, or are most people deaf?

What power supply you use?
Do you have another power supply to try? - perhaps the noise disappears...
Try disabling CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)  in  BIOS - it probably will reduce the noise, but CPU's energy consumption will increase in system's idle tasks.

Please write here if you solve the problem, or that either will change or not.

It is possible that the described problems may arise for many people with a whole new line of motherboards X58A (GA-X58A-UD3R, GA-X58A-UD5, GA-X58A-UD7...)
I'd like to hear reviews of all the owners of these boards if they have or not any such problems

Greetings,

I came to this forum because of this very issue - electronic squealing. I went through three different PSUs before figuring out it was the motherboard causing it. Incidentally, I wasn't exactly wrong the first two times - the motherboard is actually inducing the noise into the PSU (I have tried different brands and models). I'm also hearing the same noise coming from the area of the CPU. I uploaded a short clip which demonstrates the noise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDb-xQHcCx4. All of the noises in the video, including the ones which sound like HDD activity, are coming from the board and PSU. I've found the Windows Experience Test to be a predictable way to cause the board to make the noise and that is what was going on in this clip. This is not a quiet noise - I can hear from the next room.

I am running an i7-930. Disabling C1E has reduced but not eliminated the noise. All of my CPU settings in the BIOS are currently set to the default 'Auto.'

turtlexiv - thanks for post and video!

dkslim do you have same kind of noise as turtlexiv recorded on video?

After some search on youtube I am also found some video about this problem (it may appear in different components -  PSU, motherboards, videocards...). Defective or poor quality components:  capacitors or coils  >:(

Yes I confirm with the audio issues. My front panel isn't working properly.

Can you describe in more detail what problems you have there?

And someone tried to connect HDD to the new SATA3 Marvell 9128 controller and install the Windows 7 ?

There is a thread specifically about this high-pitch noise problem, please discuss here:
http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,1426.0.html

To answer the questions I was asked, the power supplies I tried with the motherboard were Antec Smartpower 450W and Corsair HX650. Both made the motherboard emit the same noise.

Disabling C1E does not reduce the noise in my case, it's the same. All my BIOS voltage settings are set to "auto". When I changed the CPU vcore to a set voltage, the noise was reduced, but I find this unacceptable, I'd like to leave settings on default Auto values WITHOUT the noise.

And yes, the noise I hear is similar to the one on the youtube video above.
