Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R problem with Installing windows 7
« on: March 18, 2010, 07:28:21 pm »
Hello!

So.. i've been trying to get my new Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R setup to work. Tried everything it seems... i install windows 7 on my ssd.. after the first reboot during the install it just power cycles... and goes no further.. on every attempt i've made

i tried it (once) on a 80gb 7200 rpm lying around... did the same.

last thing i was going to try was to run out outside the case... i accidentally put the SATA cords into my old disk instead of ssd... old disk is a normal 7200rpm 250gb disk.. and what happens? The old Windows 7 installation boots off it.. and windows notices some new hardware (mb,cpu, ram) and it runs fine...

So why wont Windows 7 install on my Intel X-25 SSD disk (that worked fine with the old motherboard and cpu/ram)

Im gonna try installing windows 7 again on that other 80gb 7200 disk i tried once before that failed...
(Udate: didnt work.. same as before)

*confused*

Anyone have an explination?

What SATA port number and controller  did you use to connect SSD?

(Win 7 64 bit)

I've tried all three ICH10R at Sata_0, Gigabyte2 at SATA_8 and Marvell 9128 at SATA_6

Trying to install Windows XP now.. just to see what happens...

Try to switch Control mode (Ctrl mode) of SATA controller to AHCI and  perhaps it will solve the problem with Windows 7 installation.

If you get to install Windows please give feedback. Do you have some issues with this board as described in my topic?

Thanks, i will try that...

However windows 7 failed also on the old 80gb using IDE.. but that might just be broken haha who knows...

I beleive i have heard that high-pitch noice mentioned when things are happening on screen... but i havnt investigated since the ... not beeing able to install win 7 comes first.

I have all 6gb of my corsair ram listed so no problems with memory.. althoguh at 1066mhz instead of 1333. I have changed that manually (yes, i have tried install windows 7 both with and without the manual changes and CMOS resets and fail-safe settings etc..)

Can you describe in more detail what happens and what you see on the screen during the first reboot

It boots normally with no unexpected messages from BIOS. Windows 7 logo shows up... it says "Starting Windows"... for 10-20 seconds then power cycles... after that it shows the options with safe-mode  (which doesnt help) mentioning that i may have installed new hardware.

For Windowx XP... after the initial "DOS"-like install the first reboot.. and then continuing the install with entering the computer name.. cd-key etc... it asks to reboot.. it does... it shows the Windows XP logo during startup.. then black screen freeze. No reboots or power cycles, just freezes.

Tried on SATA (SSD) and IDE.

And like i said.. my other SATA disk.. which used to run windows before i got the SSD-disk.. it boots fine into its windows 7. I played some xvid movie in VLC media player and started a game.. no problems. Registers the full 6gb ram and core i7 cpu ???

Thanks for the tips so far ;)

Did you load driver for the SATA controller from the USB-flash during the beginning of the Windows 7 installation?

I found a similar problem on another forum
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=16014754

It is not clear, I'm confused too and can not understand why this is happening

Hi,

No i have not loaded any drivers.

That thread you linked too seems to concern slow install of Win 7. I had that problem also, but that went away when disabling the floppy in BIOS. I will try loading SATA drivers when i get home from work today in some 7 hours  :-\

Yeah didnt work i'm afraid. Put back in my old computer to survive the weekend hah ;)

Sort of given up.. i also tried with another GFX card older one without the extra power cords... in the unlikely even that it had something to do with my zalman 600w not beeing enough.... but  no difference.

I don't know if this is going to solve your problem, it solved mine. Similar issue with you

GA-X58A-UD3R
i7-920i
6gb Corsair 1333mhz

In bios under advance CPU Settings there are to options which if disabled, they stop all these power saving gimmicks with the cpu when idle. These are:

CPU Enhanced Halt
CPU C3/C6/C7 State Support

I dasabled both of these and finally managed to go pass the first reboot. Infact all has been working fine since then....

(almost all, none of my usb logitech peripherals and freeagent desk external usb drives are recognised !)

I've had no problems installing WinXP Pro (32-bit), Windows 7 (64-bit), Ubuntu 9.10,....

NOTE:  (I have WinXP with Service Pack 3), which may make the difference if you only have SP2, but in either case, you can easily slipstream your WinXP SP2 -> to  SP3 with "nLite" tool, and microsoft's SP3 binary.

Not sure if this will help you but what I initially did was:
1./ -set ALL ofl the sata/raid crap in my bios to "IDE", left everything else "auto",  defaults, ...
(OR, just set for "Save with Optimized defaults" in your BIOS will do the same as above.)
2./ -used a plain-jane "IDE" CD/DVD drive to install my OS's.
3./ -installed both my sata2 drives in sata2_0, and sata2_1 ports (namely the first two Intel ICH10R sata ports)

Everything, and anything installed like a champ, and NO need for that press "F6" floppy headache in WinXP (unless you've Raided your drives) ?.
...,  of course afterwards just install all the latest drivers from gigabytes site once I installed the Realtek LAN driver.
;)
Also,  my MB only had bios revision "F1", so I upgraded it to the new "F5" revision which I strongly suggest you do asap. It has some good fixes, as the results below after a "1-click" O.C. with "Easy Tune 6" proves:

I can easily clock an i7-975 in turbo, without breakin' a sweat, using my i7-930, and without spending the extra $1000.00
 :)
