Performance, file-copying.

Performance, file-copying.
« on: October 22, 2010, 11:27:43 pm »
My Specs: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R rev 2.0,i7-930, Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz 12GB CL9,MSI GeForce GTX 480 1536M, Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB (system disk), CORSAIR HX 750W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V, SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200.12 1TB 7200RPM SATA/300 32MB. Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

When copying files from mye WHS 2003 (Gigabit LAN) or internal harddrive I usually get between 50-100 MB/s transfer rate.

But if I start watching a video file either with Windows Media player or Mediaplayer classic the rate goes down to 1 MB/s or KB/s.

I have connected the C300 to the Marwell SATA 3 connection and the Seagate to the intel controller.

Is this a driver problem or is this just normal?

Because of the limitations of the Marvell 9128 controller(even though it's suppposed to be SATA3) you would probably get better results from the Intel ICH10R southbridge controlled ports. I can't explain why it should make a difference just because you are watching a video file unless it's to do with the streaming.

Thank you for answering,

So I will get better stability and quicker performance by connecting the c300 SSD to the intel SATA 2 controller than the Marvell SATA 3 one?

Yes I'm afraid so. Not only that but the Marvell controller doesn't pass TRIM commands which is essential to the good health of your SSD. ;)

No problem, it is long term trouble that it helps stop. A couple of weeks is nothing.

Well well, guess what! After following the instructions you gave the transfer rate keeps stable at about 50-60 MB/s. Even while playing 2 MKV 1080 videos :)

Is it a driver issue, or Marvell hardware problem? Weird.

Well, thnx again :)

I think it's actually a Marvell firmware problem. They have just released a new update and I am hoping it has fixed it but we shall see.
If you are happy with the support please press the applaud button over my avatar. Thanks
