Z170x-Gaming 7 bios update issue
« on: January 24, 2016, 06:33:55 pm »
I have two m.2 sm951's in a Raid0 setup for my OS, but every time I update the BIOS the Riad0 setup fails and I need to create a new one and a clean install of Windows is needed.
I've always updated through @BIOS in App Center, will updating with Q-Flash give me same issue?
Has anyone else had the same problem?

Greetings,
Absolutely use Q-Flash to update your BIOS....  But, constant updating is not needed.  A BIOS update is only needed to address a specific problem and/or to add enhanced functionality.  Upgrading just to have the latest available is not necessary.

Upgrading your BIOS should not break your RAID or require a complete re-install of windows.  So try this the next time you "need" to upgrade.  Power down, remove power and disconnect both drives.  Use Q-Flash to upgrade.  Load set up defaults.  Power off, remove power.  Re-connect the m.2's.  Ensure you connect them to the same ports.  Power up, enter BIOS.  Ensure the Controller Operate mode is set to RAID.  Navigate to RAID Configuration.  Ensure the correct RAID level, and stripe size is selected.  Do NOT set up, create or write any metadata to the existing array.  Make any other BIOS settings, changes to Boot Order and save the BIOS.  Don't worry if you don't see the array "volume0" (or other name) as a boot option when you save and try to restart the first time.  It will be detected and move itself to the first boot device after the above config is save and you restart.  If further BIOS tweaks are required, you can make them now...  as long as you get the RAID reconfigured first.
