H55M-UD2H with Intel i5 cpu - Advice and Info needed
« on: March 24, 2010, 01:48:16 pm »
I have to build a workstation for a user who will be primarily doing desktop publishing in WISIWIG and some photo/image with Photoshop...now using XP but will migrate to Win7. The workstation uses a 37" LCD 1080p TV/Monitor.

I'm looking at the Gigabyte H55M-UD2H mobo that utilizes the on-board HD video in the Intel i3,5,7 chips. A couple of questions, though:

1) I have not found any specific ref-
erences to the resolutions available
on the Intel chips. Anyone know?

2) Since the i5-660 and the i5-750 are
the same price...what advantage would
one have over the other for this type
of application?

Thanks for any comments.

1/ Should be any. I'd be astonished if it can't do 1080P given the obvious use is as a htpc. Intel drivers are historically rubbish though, so there's always a little uncertainly there.

2/ The i5 660 is a hyperthreaded dual core. The i3 530 and i3 540 are the same processor, clocked lower. If you're willing to overclock the 530 or 540 makes a lot more sense. All of these include the onboard graphics chip.
The i5 750 is a true quad core, it is not hyperthreaded. It doesn't have a graphics chip built in. It uses more power, but it is a faster processor than the i3. If you are going to use a separate graphics card, then the 750 paired with a P55 board is probably the best choice. If not, then the 530 with a H55 board.

Hope that helps a little, Google will find you benchmarks if you wish to estimate how much faster the 750 is.

Maybe a little late, but I'm using the board with an i3 530, and talking to a 1080p TV over HDMI, and all is OK.
A few minor niggles are that at startup, the Win7 splash screen is offset (misses the left third of the screen), but this may be the TV, not the board?
When it fully boots, it is fine at 1080p

Must have the latest drivers to get sound working over HDMI.

Also, if the TV is off when it boots, the mobo seems to blank the HDMI, and doesn't recover when the TV is switched on- this requires a 'blind' restart.

You do know that the i5-750 in a H55M-UD2H will not give you on-board video? Right?
