Black screen with a GV-R927XOC-2GD

I am experiencing a black screen some 30 seconds after I start a game like crysis 2.  When the screen goes black, sometimes I can hear a buzzing sound.  The fans on the GPU stop but the fan on the CPU keeps going.  The PC requires a hard restart to get going again.

This starting happening after I swapped a low spec APU out for an Athlon X4 860K.

Motherboard is a GA-F2A88X-D3H (rev. 3.0).
Power supply is 1000W.

All temperatures are low.  I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled drivers from scratch.  Both BIOS have been flashed and are up to date.  I don't get a black screen when I put the GPU in the PCI Express x16 (running at x4) slot.

After months of trying, I just solved this myself.  It turns out that if you don't have an APU in my motherboard, it doesn't support running a GPU at Gen 3.  In the motherboard bios, the PCIE setting was at Auto.  I changed this to Gen 2 and it instantly solved my problems.
