GA-Z97X-UD5H-BK giving BSOD with Uncorrectable Hardware Error

GA-Z97X-UD5H-BK giving BSOD with Uncorrectable Hardware Error
« on: September 11, 2015, 11:32:52 pm »
I recently upgraded my computer from a Gigabyte/AMD Motherboard to the GA-Z97X-UD5H-BK Black Edition, with a I5-4690K, and 8G Corsair Vengence (2-4GB) 1866. I have not touched any overclocking features, the BIOS setting is as it was from the factory.

I am getting a BSOD with Uncorrectable Hardware Error during idle time. It never happens when I am actively using the computer. Only when it is idle and in the screen saver mode. If I use the computer hard (warm things up) it doesn’t happen for the rest of the day.  I have a Sapphire Radeon HD6670 graphics card and I have tried it with the built in Intel graphics, either give the same result.

I have not reinstalled Win7. Does this really make a difference with a “hardware error”?

Not sure what to try next.

Greetings,
What is the specific STOP message?  Is there a numeric or alpha numeric value you have omitted?

Please provide your full system specs.

How old is your PSU?  Brand, power, wattage?
http://support.amd.com/en-us/recommended/power-supplies

Do you need to re-install your OS?  We can discuss next steps after you've provided the above.

Just got BSOD about 10 seconds after the screen saver (Ribbons) kicked in. Same Uncorrectable Hardware Error message. This time the error code was:
0x0000000000000124
(0x0-0,0xFFFFFA80088A9028,0x00000000BF800000,0x0000000000200401)

Thanks for the info.  I'm inclined to suspect your PSU since you have upgraded all but this component. It appears to be the weak link.

Other items to check or perform:

System Event Viewer
Perform Mem Test (4-6hrs should be plenty)

BIOS
Look at your Hardware Monitor, Temps and Voltages
What's the CPU Temp after 15 min of use when idle > Just reboot and enter BIOS after 15 min to monitor
What are voltage values for 3.3, 5 and 12v rails - are these stable or do they fluctuate dramatically?
If you have SIV installed you can perform these within the OS

BIOS settings - Things you can change safely
BIOS MIT > Enable XMP > Profile 1 (for your memory)

However, I fee like the PSU is going to be the issue.

Well I am certainly willing to try a new PSU. Is 430w good enough?. I am looking at the Corsair CX series CX430. I don't have a lot in my computer, just what I listed before. I don't overclock. I have a Watcom Pad hooked to USB3 and occasional use of USB Memory sticks.

Greetings,
You did perform a fresh install of the OS on the new hardware right?  I hesitated to ask this because of the enormity of change.  I know you said you haven't re-installed, but that's vague and I want to be clear.   If a fresh install was performed, please proceed below.

Review the System Event Viewer...  are there any entries relating to the Waicom Tablet or USB?  Check under both Application and System headings.  I was going to ask if you had anything externally connected earlier, but believed reviewing the event logs would bring to light any issues.  What happens if you disconnect the tablet, does the BSOD cease?

I'd still test my memory for a brief period of time.  While the error doesn't indicate memory, it's better to be thorough.

There are benefits to using a brand name PSU.  Known quality of components, higher reliability, often Active PFC, Typical 80+ or > efficiency.  Reliable (stable) amperage & power delivery across all rails.  Lower quality "knockoffs" often cut corners that can result in instability, fluctuation and premature failure.  That said the CX430 is a decent PSU.  Certainly better than a no-name knockoff.  While its not enthusiast grade, I have put many as replacements into less demanding systems.  The chart I provided above is AMD recommend power supplies.  I don't think there were any below 600w recommended.  I can however from experience say that a 430w PSU of known quality is enough to run your rig.  I looked at 3 different 6670's on Sapphires website.  Their minimum stated is 400w.  Lets confirm the above items before you purchase.

I haven't yet reinstalled Windows. Had the error been anything other than "Uncorrectable Hardware Error" I would have done so right away. Reinstalling is a big task and I didn't want to do it if I really had a hardware issue that could result in having to return the m/b and being without a computer for a while.

So all you did was disconnect the boot drive on your AMD based install of windows and move it to an intel based motherboard. And this was in hopes of discovering a hardware issue that would keep you from re-installing windows.   Am I missing something?  I hope this is not the case.  If so, I have failed you by not confirming this upfront.

You do realize that from windows standpoint its like going to sleep in one place and waking up in a foreign country.  Unless you use sysprep or a back up software with universal restore that wipes the HAL, the chances of successfully migrating two systems with completely different architecture successfully is practically nil.

That is correct. Everything seemed to work fine except for this occasional BSOD issue.

Then as I said above, I should have asked this.  Had  a fresh install been performed, I'd have no problem recommending a new PSU.  In light of you migrating between two completely different platforms, which the first boot was likely a nightmare of hardware re-detection, activation and you supplying countless drivers I'm really impressed you had the luck you did.  Again, I should have clarified.

Have you looked at the system Event Viewer?

Please post pics of your Device Manager...  Is it clean?

Chances are, you need to reinstall your OS.  Not doing so is probably just asking for long term trouble.

The System Event Viewer shows thousands of Administrative Event errors, some are critical. The Device Manager looks clean, although the SSD on the SATA interface is misdiagnosed as on SCSI.

I think you are right about a reinstall. I will bite the bullet and start that tomorrow.

Thank you for all your assistance. I will update later this week with the results.

No joy in Mudville...

Reinstalled Windows 7 from scratch. No BSOD while I was actively working on anything. On 2nd day after install, when the compuer had gone through screensaver and shut off monitor, about 12 minutes after I had ceased doing anything, I got the BSOD. Got it again after restarting and leaving the computer alone. Same code 124 with slightly different sub-codes 0xFFFFFA80088A4028 and 0xFFFFFFA80088CB028

Possible clue...

The BSODs happened about half an hour after I installed Gigabytes AppCenter. I noticed in Event Viewer that atlhough the ApCenter was sitting in the Task Bar, I got a rash of errors of this type:

Application 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Gigabyte\AppCenter\ApCent.exe' (pid 4956) cannot be restarted - Application SID does not match Conductor SID..

So I turned off AppCenter, stopped it from loading at startup and rebooted. Haven't got an BSOD in the last 2 hours now. Not definitive but we'll wait a few days and see what happens.

Well, we have seen a small rash of AppCenter issues and Windows 10...  compatibility mostly, won't run, install and in some cases un-install.  Mostly in the AMD section.  Not following progress too closely, but would suggest using the latest available for your board and not what came with the MB CD. I'm running 8.1 on my Z97 with AppCenter and SIV so I'm not having issues of course.  You could be on to something though.
