GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 Fan Control
« on: February 27, 2016, 08:06:06 pm »
Hi everyone. I've just ordered the GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 mainboard. I've noticed the system fan headers are all 4-pin with bios fan control. Will the bios control the fans if I connect 3-pin fans or do I need to order some 4-pin fans? Thanks in advance.

It's not a difficult question.

Yes you should be able to control in the bios. You should be able to set the speed of each fan manually.

Many thanks. I found that all the 4-pin headers can control 3-pin fans except the cpu fan header.

The 4 pin headers on the Z170X Gaming 7 MB have the following pins:
1 GND
2 Speed Control
3 Sense
4 VCC

I am not sure which 4 pin connector fans would be compatible with this so I could take full advantage of the speed control features provided by the BIOS and this MB.  I am looking for as high a cfm rating as possible yet quite.  I have two Noctua fans now, for my CPU cooler they are quite.  Would like another one to mount on the front of my case blowing rearward over my GPU and out the back.  I'd like to have it speed controlled based on the GPU temp...not the CPU or overall system temp.

Is this possible?  What fan would do what I'm looking for?

There's not a real way to tie case fan RPM to GPU temps.  You could semi achieve this by creating a custom fan curve, or by purchasing a fan controller, but in both situations, case fan RPM would not vary based solely on GPU temps.  Sorry, hope that helps.
