No audio on GA-Z170X-UD5 w/GTX 980 Ti

The realtek audio seeems to disappear from my windows 10 setup - perhaps related to Nvidia driver updates.  It was
working.

After a system reboot, I nolonger had audio.  (little red in bottom right).  Pulling up playback devices nolonger shows
realtek audio, it does show digital audio (HDMI), which I'm not using.

Under device manager, System Devices, I see two High Definition Audio controllers - I assume one is the Motherboard and the other is on the Graphics card.  The first one is always in error state - can't load.

I have tried the following:
* Disabled/uninstalled everything (High def audio controllers in System Devices (which wont stay uninstalled unless I disable and then uninstall).
* Disabled/uninstalled items in Sound, video controllers
* Uninstalled, reinstalled ReakTek audio drivers from Giga-byte and from RealTek
* Checked the BIOS setting on the Motherboard has the onboard audio set to enabled.

No sound.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Ed.
