Overclocking procedure for EX58-UD5 and i7 920?
« on: March 04, 2009, 12:14:34 am »
I am pretty well up to speed with over clocking intel socket 775 Cpu's , and have successfully over clocked 4 other systems very recently for my family.

But... I am having a problem with a newly built i7 set-up that is using the following:

Antec 900 case
i7 920 Cpu
Akasa AK-967 cooler
Gigabyte EX58 -UD5 Motherboard (now flashed to F5)
G Skill 6GB DDR3 PC3 -10666C9 (1333 mhz) Triple channel RAM (3 x 2GB)
BFG GTX 295 - 1792MB

Where ever I look on the web, there are very comprehensive write ups on how to over clock the i7 920 cpu, that are without a doubt written by well informed experienced experts. Some of these procedures are pages long, and because the person writing it, wants to convey the message fully and give a full account of why and how they did it, the very salient procedure and details are hidden inside the report and it is quite difficult to see the wood for the trees.

My question is: Does anyone already have procedure that is a condensed down version that is easy to follow and does not have all the padding? If they don't, has anyone considered doing this? I would even be happy to send the person doing it a beer or 4 or 5. Not joking!

I would hope the procedure would take the form of...

In the bios.....to clock to 3.0 Ghz do the following:

a.
b.
c.
d
e.
f.
etc.

Test for stability at this setting for a determined time.

Rinse and repeat for 3.2 Ghz.

Test for stability

Rinse and repeat for 3.4 Ghz, all the way up to 4.0 Ghz

Now before you say google it, I have and that is why I am getting bogged down with too much detail. Also I am now getting too long in the tooth and the older you get the harder it is to retain the information. The truth be known I am an OAP. There I have said it!

Can anyone help please?

Kind regards

Set your base clock to 143Mhz, leave turbo and HT on.
Set the Vcore to 1.3V
Set the memory voltage and timings to default, 8x multiplier
QPI voltage to 1.3V

Leave everything else for first and boot up.
If it posts and manages to get into windows, stability test.

If it doesn't work,

Set the Vcore to 1.33V
Try again, keep going to 1.36V

If at 1.36V, try setting the QPI voltage to 1.35V

Then if stable you can go higher base clocks until unstable, then focus mainly on the vcore and qpi volts.
Make sure that the QPI speed is below 7.5Ghz, usually more stable then. (3.75Ghz * 2)
And keep an eye on when the memory reaches the 1333Mhz, as after that it may need a bit more volts if it is overclocked or it may be fine depending on how lucky you are.

First of all 4 hours is probably needed for overclocking, then once at desired clock speed 8+ hours is preferred.
