I am using a Startech adaptor TB3 to TB2 with any luck at the moment.(StarTech TBT3TBTADAP TH3->TH2 adapter)
Attached to disk is a Laacie drive.

I am just getting the message below when i plug it in.

"the last usb device you plugged in is malfunctionned" (when i plug the adaptor)

but even more strange , when i plug a USB C drive (flash drive) it doesnt mount (the drive works i tested it )

could someone help me with that issue ?

Greetings,

What BIOS rev are you running?

Did the ports every work correctly?

Your driver version is correct: 16.1.47.275

If running the latest BIOS (F5).  Have you tried running the FW update utility? B16.0818.1

1.Firmware 21+ TI 1.7.6
2.Support Intel GA-Z170X-UD5 TH
3.Must update the latest BIOS version.
4.Please install Thunderbolt Driver first before install this utility.
5.Please follow the steps instructed after executing Thunderbolt FW Update Tool, remove the system power cord for at least 30 seconds after FW update. Thunderbolt function will be available after system powers on.

Before performing any of the steps above, Please unplug any devices from the ports.  Remove the device in Device Manager and restart the machine.  Check status in DM.  Does Code 10 still display for the device?  No device will mount or connect if the device is in a Code 10 state.

Did it ever work..  or is this a new build/install?

Have you tried removing the device as I suggested and rebooting?

Ok.  So this is a fresh install of Windows 10 on a GA-Z170X-UD5 TH.  The Thunderbolt has never worked.

Please press the start button and type winver.  What build of windows are you running?

Next, start button type..   command ...  right-click and select run as administrator

Type at command prompt>  sfc /scannow        now press enter

Report those results.

In BIOS, Under Peripherals > Intel (R) Thunderbolt...  What settings do you have.  Since the device is present in the DM I know you have it enabled, but are there any other settings?

You may also want to review the System Event Viewer for errors.  Additional information could be present.

thanks a lot !

winver : 10.0 (Build 10420)
system scan result :
Windows ressource Protectino did not find any integrity violation

Intel Thunderbolt Technology = Enabled
ThunderBolt Boot Support = Enabled

Thunderbolt PCIe Cache-line Size = 32
Ignore Thunderbolt Option Rom = Disabled
Thunderbolt SwSMI Delay = 0
TBT Device IO resource Support = Enabled

under system event... i dont see anything related to this....
should i check under application ?

thanks again for your GREAT help...

could the win10 be the reason ?
The thunderbolt chip could be "not working" ... but tehn why is the USB C NOT working ?
are they runned by the same chip on the motherboard ?

just found this on the web:
The Intel Alpine Ridge controller which enables Thunderbolt 3 is actually a multifunctional bit of silicon. As well as supporting TB3 over USB Type-C (meaning DisplayPort or storage), it can also support USB 3.1 at 10 Gbps over Type-C, HDMI 2.0 and Power Delivery 2.0. Each of these features needs to be enabled in hardware, so not all Alpine Ridge (AR) motherboards support all the features, which makes any AR implementation somewhat confusing.  For example, in the Z170X-UD5 TH, the AR controller gives two Type-C ports, suitable for TB3, USB 3.1, and usually some form of fast charging (Amazon says 36W, but the GIGABYTE website does not confirm this). Technically this motherboard also has HDMI 2.0, but this is provided by a different chip (the MCDP2800, an LSPcon) entirely. Nice and simple, right?

thanks  :D :D

is my only option sending the board back ?
