Let me guess.  Crucial SSD?

Please provide your full system specs.  Are you OC'ing?

Disable fast boot / ultra fast boot in your BIOS if being used.  If you are using the Fast Boot App in Gigabyte App Center, uninstall it and restart.  Then make changes in BIOS (disable), F10 and restart. You'll have to wait until windows update happens for the results.

Hi Shadowsports,
Yes it's crucial ssd and I'm running the 4.4 ghz auto OC from the mobo menu.
16gig ram, crucial as well I think. I'm not in front of my PC at moment.
Gtx970,
i7 6700k cpu
Three old Samsung hdd on the other sata ports.
The crucial ssd is on port 0.
It happens everytime Windows 10 does its sneaky background download.
Thank you for your time,
PZ

The SSD was a lucky guess  ;) But not a surprise. Crucial SSD's are known to have compatibility issues in many environments.

Is this a new build?  Did it ever work  properly?

What is the speed of your RAM?

Imediate steps you can take:

Disable OC
Disable Fast / Ultra Fast Boot if either are enabled.

Hi SP,
I built it a year ago - only problem I have had was at first it wouldn't hold its OC and would default. Fixed that with bios update to F7 and making sure Windows features 8/10 were enabled. I think I had Linux selected before. Always built my own systems but this was fist build in 6 years - the only part I really struggle with is bios and software as I'm dyslexic and have trouble reading sometimes.
System runs great never a problem until Windows 10 updates in the background. The PC will suddenly hang and reboot and change boot order.
Only system hangs I have had in over 18months are Windows updates.
Ram is 3000mhz vengeance lpx ddr4 on profile 1.
Fast boot disabled on bios.
I have just uninstalled fast boot from gigabyte app centre also.
Cms support enabled.
Lan DXE boot ops disabled.
Storage boot options- legacy only
Other pci device priority uefi only.
Another thought should sata be set to auto?
Thank you again for your time,
PZ
Edit - this Windows update hang occurrs whether OC is on or not.

Is your W10 install clean or did you upgrade?  10 came out in July of 2015 (greater than 18 months ago)?  You said above you built the machine a year ago.  Did this install come from another system?  And then you put that drive into a new build?

I'm trying to discern where the problem is originating from?

Hi,
I'm wracking my brains to remember. I upgraded several machines at the same time.
I either installed Windows 8pro or 7pro from cd or usb.. Then upgraded to 10. I think it was USB - coincidentally I had that very same usb in the PC when it did its upgrade lose boot order trick Monday.
Thank you ,
PZ
Edit - yes the drive was from another system so I may have upgraded straight over the win 7 install that was on it.

Moving installs between different hardware doesn't always work out.  The behavior you are seeing is a good example of why a fresh install of an OS is preferred.

I would recommend doing this now.  Back up your data and bite the bullet.  Its 1-3 hours of pain, with a positive result.  This should also allow you to change your BIOS settings to UEFI (non legacy) which windows 10 supports natively.  Be sure to make regular back ups of your data and 1 or more system images should the need arise to recover.

ha - happened again.
it happens if there is an update for windows 10 and the USB stick I installed windows from is in the PC at the time of download of update.
This happens after 2 clean installs from USB

Windows 10 has a Defer feature update option which can stop the anniversary update for a few months till it is tested properly.
