GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 : new build fails to boot (5 long beeps)

GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 : new build fails to boot (5 long beeps)
« on: February 12, 2016, 12:46:06 am »
When booting my new GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 for the first time I get 5 long beeps then a shut-down and repeat(25 seconds).

Lights come on on the board and cooler and all the fans spin up.
I have only installed CPU, PSU, Memory and Cooler.
All components checked by eye and reseated more than once.
I have tried with 1,2 and no sticks of memory with no change in boot behaviour.

Any advice gratefully received.

Hi,

usually 5 beeps would indicate an issue with the CPU.

Have you double checked that all power leads are correctly connected to the motherboard? This includes the 8 pin ATX 12V socket next to the CPU.

If all power leads are properly connected, check that the PSU is functioning correctly.

Examine the CPU socket for any bent pins. You really need to do this with a magnifying glass as you can't really see them (well I can't) with the naked eye.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Thanks,

Yes, both power leads are firmly connected and I have reconnected them a couple of times.
The CPU pins look fine, I have checked the pins very carefully and reseated the CPU.

I am pretty sure it is not the PSU (currently a Corsair CX600M). If I boot without the 8 pin then it doesn't even give POST beeps and the board leds don't light-up

Being thorough... and the cooler is connected to what header on the MB...   :) yeah we've got to check?

Also, please confirm you don't have any back plates that are grounding/touching something they shouldn't be.

To the CPU_FAN header. The only back plate is the plastic cooler connector. I have since swapped to a new motherboard and get the same issue.

If another PSU yields the same result, you have your culprit.  The CPU as absic suggested.

OK after much hair pulling the problem was the RAM. I have obtained a different brand/spec (2333 rather than 2400) and it now works fine.

The memory that fails is:
Ballistix Sport BLS2C8G4D240FSA 16GB kit (8GB x 2) DDR4 PC4-19200 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.2V

and this is on the compatibility list:
http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5529#memory%20support%20list

I have 2 sticks of the BLS2C8G4D240FSA so it is unlikely they are both defective. Seems like the board just doesn't like this memory. However none of my machines are DDR4 compatible to test it.

I am not the only one with this issue:

Would be nice to have a definitive answer.

I think you are saying the memory that works is 2133 right. The thing is the CPU will only support 1866 or 2133 without any OC. Yes all memory should run at the default setting at 2133. But we have seen many of these board have problems with fast memory.

Quote
Support for DDR4 3333(O.C.) /3300(O.C.) /3200(O.C.) /3000(O.C.) /2800(O.C.) /2666(O.C.) /2400(O.C.) /2133 MHz memory modules.

If people remember that years ago when they started making the CPU's. That all CPU's have a base clock speed. But you could OC to a point & same today. That is the same thing here that memory base clock speed is 2133. Now what they are doing is making memory that you can OC it. By just running it in XMP mode. That has to support that mode too.

The thing is if you do get it to run at the faster speed. Do you really seen any change really NO. It is like Turbo mode for the CPU. It might show you the the CPU is running faster in the bios. But when in windows what does it run at what windows feel it needs.

What I'm really saying is the MB, CPU, & Memory companies are really pulling the wool over you eyes on this crap. I have been here for 3 yrs. Problems on the Z170 series board it has the worse problem on memory of any thing on this forum. Yes the Z87 boards did have problems too but nothing like this. Plus Smacker glad you got things running.

I also have this problem. Ballistix Sport BLS8G4D240FSС 16GB kit (8GB x 2) ; Gigabyte GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 ; Core i5 7400T CPU. 5 long beeps and reboot, no more.

I have solution: upgrade BIOS version (manually flash) to last state (F22), and all OK. Motherboard starts, Windows PE boot from USB.
