Gigabyte Z170X G1 Gaming board with Corsair AX860i..
« on: May 25, 2017, 04:43:49 pm »
I put together this new PC last April, and so far the original PSU went into a boot loop, and would occasionally get to the desktop and work for a while, but then suddenly crash and go into the boot loop again with it trying to start up.

I RMA'd it back to Scan Comps who provided a replacement in May.

Then around March this year, it started to play up again, so I got in touch a Corsair rep on a forum, who arranged for it to be shipped over to the USA for them to test.
I wasn't until they did a replica of my set up by getting the G1 Gaming board, that the problems showed up for them as well.

So far - May- the 3rd one is still performing as it should.
Question....anyone else have problems with the Ax860i on the G1 Gaming board or similar model ?
Thanks.

P.S. I do have a spare RM550X in my spares cupboard, and an old HX620. The HX620 I used as a spare to test everything, which worked just fine, and then bought the new RM550X, which also worked fine for the couple of weeks before the new AX860i arrived.

That's a great PSU.

I suspect this has to do with the board, its BIOS rev, a setting or your memory choice and not your PSU selection.

Thanks mate.
Yep Corsair reported that it does not like my Gigabyte board, as they bought the exact model to test the PSU on, because they could not replicate the faults using a similar quality board.
Using Google, I found that quite a few other people have this problem with the AX860i.

I recently upgraded my BIOS from F7 to F20, so no going back to F7 even if I wanted to.

Phanteks Primo case.
G1 Gaming board.
i7 6700K - default.
Corsair AIO H110i GTX cooler.
Corsair LPX 2 x 8GB 2666Ghz Vengeance memory.
Samsung 950 2 x M.2 Nvme 256GB drives one with Win 7 Ult, and 'tother with Win 7 Home Prem.
Samsung 850 250GB SSD Win 7 Home Prem.
Intel 750 Nvme 400GB drive. Win 10
WD 1TB HDD and WD 500GB HDD - both have back up copies of Win 10 on them.
EVGA GF GTX 980Ti FTW video.
2 x Dell monitors - 24" plus 27" G-Sync.

I don't like reinstalling Windows unless I really have to.... ;D

You can downgrade, but its a small PITA.  https://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=17957.0

Use the back up BIOS for the short term until a newer rev is released.  BIOS_SW is located near the bottom of the board below the battery.

Is why I always have a back up on a spare hard drive so if I have to reinstall windows it comes from the back up and then depending on the time of back up I just have to do a few updates to games and maybe windows.

Thanks chaps.
My SSD's and HDD's were not affected because my PC would run just fine using my old HX620 or the newer RM550X although that doesn't really have a lot of output ports for Sata/molex - only two.

But the 3rd replacement AX860i (at the moment) is running just fine, but have the above 'spares' if it happens again.

I have cloned copies of Win 7 and Win 10 on other drives, so easy enough to clone over if a drive goes wonky. I boot them up now and again to apply MS updates and software/game updates, so that that I know they still work ok, and reasonably up to date.

Back up built into windows uses .xml for image back ups. Its free, no frills, and efficient.

Well, my 3rd AX860i has gone wobbly again, and doesn't work.
It booted up to the desktop, then froze, and had to hold in the power button to get it to shut down, rebooted and then the PC just went into the boot loop sequence, and would not start.
I had to press the power button again to shut it down, and then turn off the PSU when it started the boot loop again.

This model of PSU just does not like my Z170X Gaming G1 board, and am currently running with the Corsair RM550X and it is working just fine.
I wonder what it is with the motherboard that buggers up the PSU ?
It has been tested at the Corsair RMA section, and they even bought the same motherboard, and my PSU failed on that.

So this is now my 3rd PSU, and I am not going to RMA it back to them, because I don't want another one in return, because I am now pretty sure that it will only last a couple of months, before it packs up, near enough the same as the previous two.

So that is some £400 down the drain, and I will just have to write it off to experience......... :( :'(
