Z97 Gaming g1 c920 usb boot problem
« on: October 24, 2017, 02:17:04 am »
Hello, recently i upgraded from an amd 970 chipset to a gigabyte z97 gaming g1 and i experience the following problem.Sometimes when i restart my computer or i just start it up,my motherboard will hang for a little with a code 9c and then when it will boot in windows i get the message usb not recognized(c920).The only solution to make my camera work again is to replug it or to completely cut off the electrical power of the computer from the back switch of the psu.So after multiple experiments with drivers, reinstallation of windows and different bios settings i narrowed down that the main offender is the xhci controller, when i disable it and use the ehci instead everything works fine. Now my question is:is this some kind of incompatibility with my camera and my mobo's xhci controller?can this be a faulty motherboard(is second hand but with warranty)?Note also that my camera worked fine with 2 motherboards amd chipset both and also my z97 gaming g1 has problem just with my logitech c920.Does anyone has same problem like me in this motherboard?Lastly to say that i upgraded also the bios to a beta one with no avail...Thank you in advance and sorry for the long topic :-)

I've got a z97 board and also own this same webcam.  I haven't used them together, but will give it a try before the weekend.  There should not be any issues from a hardware compatibility standpoint...  but the OS you use might matter.

xhci is supported natively in W8 and 10.  Windows 7 does not support xhci preboot natively, but I believe your BIOS provides backward compatibility.  This is probably why it works with xhci disabled.

Are you using windows 7?

Hello and thank you for the answer. No im not using win7 i use win10,i also tried to install win8.1 to another hdd just to see if the problem persists on the win8.1,so when the problem occured in my win10 installation i changed my ssd(win10) with the hdd(win8.1) that had the win8.1 and the problem was there. So i believe it has to do with the motherboard because the only solution is to replug it,even if i uninstall and reinstall the device from the device manager still it doesnt recognise it.Also the problem isnt consistent, and it needs like 2-3 days of restarts or boot ups in order to reappear. It would be very helpful if you could test it also like 2-3 days and give me a clear image of what the culprit may be. :-)

What model MB do you have?  Have you tried with the cam plugged into another port?  It must be plugged in directly.  No hubs, etc.  I'll see what USB settings I am using and post those as well.

My motherboard model is a GA-Z97X-Gaming G1.Camera is directly connected to motherboard without hubs, also i tried all ports and different usb settings as well and everytime the same results, the only thing that seemed to ease the problem it was when i installed the generic drivers for the camera but again in the end it couldnt recognise it.

I saw F10b on tweaktown, but no release notes of course.

Ports are shared intel, and Renasas

Chipset drivers available from GB 10.1.1.8, from Intel are 10.1.1.42 (so no help there)

Checked the Renasas website but didn't see much.

By chance are you receiving and Launcher_Main errors in the OS when using the webcam?

Try resetting your BIOS, CLR_CMOS.  Load set up defaults and then only change what is needed for the system to boot properly.

Also test with another webcam to see if the behavior persists.

Hello and thank you for your interest about my topic.I have reset cmos many times, also i reinstalled bios f10b version and back to f9,loaded defaults too. With a minoru 3d webcam that i tested it,it doesnt have problem at all is working fine.I havent Launcher_Main errors too.My other usb devices are a logitech g502 and a corsair k70 keyboard.Just with logitech c920 i have this problem and the weird thing is that it doesnt do it all the time, just out of the blue one day isnt recognised anymore and i have to replug it.Maybe i can test with another psu(seasonic m12iievo620w)?but i cant see why it can be related when my previous system was working fine without problems.Unrelative to this, one problem that i had with this mb,when i was exiting from the classic bios just without save i was getting an error (BlInitializeLibrary Failed 0xc000009a)but with the fall update it fixed by itself also the f10b bios was fixing this issue. One more question,do you get any freezes(3-5sec)when you run intel burn test?tests are passing but i thought now maybe isnt normal to get freezes and all this is related with something faulty in the motherboard,i have a 4790k too.

I have been fortunate, and had rock solid stability with this build.

I stuck with the F8 BIOS since I'm running a Devils Canyon 4th gen CPU and noted many people having issues running 4th gen CPU's with the Broadwell 5th gen BIOS.  I imagine this has since been resolved.  My CPU (4790k) idles at 800Mhz generally, stepping works perfectly. It runs a little warm, but these CPU's used a larger die and higher vCore so this is to be expected.

(BlInitializeLibrary Failed 0xc000009a - I've seen this error too a few times, but I'm rarely in my BIOS, as I don't OC and am a set and forget type.  I think I saw it last when I was messing with Secure Boot Settings.

I'm running build 1709 Fall Creators Update, and have connected the c920.  Working fine here. Have cold started a handful of times.

My BIOS settings:

XHCI Mode: SMART AUTO
Legacy Support - Enabled
XHCI Handoff - Enabled
EHCI Handoff - Disabled

Sorry I can't reproduce the behavior on this end.

Hello,i had some graphic glitches when i was watching videos,to bsplayer for example, also my screen was going black for 1 second during start up.So i uninstalled my gpu drivers with ddu and reinstalled them, except the graphic glitches that went away,2 days now my camera works perfectly with plenty of boot ups.I will test it further and i will report back.

Nice if it turns out to be something to do with the graphics driver.  Hope you'll have good luck.
