8GB(4x2GB) RAM FOR GA-890GPA-UD3H MOTHERBOARD

8GB(4x2GB) RAM FOR GA-890GPA-UD3H MOTHERBOARD
« on: May 17, 2010, 03:23:21 pm »
Has anyone been able to successfully put 8GB of RAM in this motherboard yet. If so could you specifiy what type and if any modifications were needed, I have tried Corsair which was listed on the QVL in the manual but it did not work and I did update the BIOS with one stick of RAM first but still did not work. Prosessor in AMD Phenom 2 x4 955 Quad Core.  Appreciate any help.

Hi,

When you say it isn't working can you expand the problem a little?

Does the PC boot?
Does the system run but then BSOD?
Is it a problem with timings?

After updating BIOS did you remember to load Optimized Defaults?

Could you also post full details of the memory that you are using (make, voltage, timings etc.) along with full system specs as this will help with troubleshooting.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply,
The CPU will not boot up with all four of the memory sticks in place. if I take out the memeory stick in slot #2 then the CPU will boot up normally. The memory sticks are ( CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 ).  All the RAM will work if tried individually as long as the #2 slot is not in use, I can place up to three sticks in the CPU and it works as long as the second blue slot is not in use.   The RAM is listed in the QVL for the Motherboard.  Not sure about the timings or the optimized defaults I have not tried either of those yet.

Hi,

Sounds as if you have a faulty memory channel on the Mobo. I would RMA the board.

Thanks for the reply,
This is the third mobo i have tried with 2 different types of RAM. Same problem with each Mobo and RAM.  If you like I can list all parts but I feel it is not a MOBO problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks again for the help.

Hi,

Didn't realise it was your THIRD board with same problem and SECOND set of memory, ouch!

OK, as I say: Never give up; Never Surrender!

If you could list all parts it would help, just to see if there is something that jumps out.
Also reset BIOS to optimised Defaults, if there is a problem, doing this will give a good starting position for further trouble shooting.

I had an issue yesterday when I replaced my CPU which turned out to be something VERY basic but I only discovered this after stripping the PC down, replacing the Graphics card removing all the HDD's and practically re-building the machine twice, only to discover that the 8 pin power lead had come lose when I had moved the chassis...... Oooops did I feel like an idiot! :-[

Thanks for the reply,

I set BIOS to optimised defaults with 2 sticks of RAM inserted for dual channel operation and had no problems booting and running CPU. Next i tried to boot with adding RAM to 2nd blue slot but would not show screen and I tred all sticks of RAM in the slot to make sure no RAM was faulty.  My components are (ASUS EAH5830 DIRECTCU/2DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 5830 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ Eyefinity),  (AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor),  (COOLER MASTER Silent Pro RSA00-AMBAJ3-US 1000W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V v2.92 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply), ( Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive).  Any other suggestions? Thanks.

This is just my experience - I have no answers
I'm in the process of building a system
MB - GA-890GPA-UD3h rev 1
Memory   4x2GB  Corsair Dominator DDR3    1333 PC3 10666    CMD8GX3M4A1333C7
(So we have almost the exact same setup)

When I first attempted to boot, it wouldn't even post.
After Gigabyte support asked what beep codes I had, I grabbed a case speaker off an old
machine, and found that I was getting 3 long beeps.     Gigabyte couldn't actually say that
3 long beeps means memory problem, but they pointed me that way.
I started pulling memory and trying the different sticks in the slot closest to the CPU.
I immediately started getting the computer to post.  So I thought that I had a bad stick.
Yet, I also tried putting all the sticks back in, and it worked???
This, of course, sounds like a seating problem.   But I don't buy that.  I'm very careful that
I snap memory all the way in.    So what happened??   Your guess is as good as mine.
I just know but I suspect either very fickle memory or very fickle MB.

Sorry that I'm no help.   Since my advice is to just keep reseating the memory until it works.

Thanks for the reply wigglytoes,
I have replaced the RAM many times and feel positive that i seated the RAM properly over the course of 3 mobo's and 2 sets of RAM and all the time spent putting RAM into different slots to see if they were faulty or not and the RAM works in all slots except the second blue slot on all three mobo's.  I would still like to know if anyone has installed 8GB's of RAM into one of these mobo's yet. Once again thanks for the posts and appreciate any help offered.

I am having the exact same issue.  Did you ever find a resolution?

I have tried two different brands of memory - two different mobos - same trouble each time.  Cannot get POST with memory installed in SLOT 2 AND / OR SLOT 4.

Dark Mantis... thank you for replying.

I have booted the system in unganged mode at 1333 speed with success using 2 GB in slot 1, or 2 GB in slot 3, or 4 GB (2 in slot 1 and 2 in slot 3).  I am running the most current BIOS.

The system will not post with memory installed in slot 2 or slot 4 - regardless of BIOS settings.

I have tried two different brands of memory (first Patriot 1333 and now on Kingston 1800).  No difference.

I have tried two different mobos - same result on both.  Any other ideas?

You don't say what model CPU you are using but, try pulling the RAM speed back to 1066 Mhz to see if you can get the RAM to run with all 4 slots filled. Leave all the other BIOS  DRAM settings to auto.

I am running an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black CPU 3.4 GHz.

I have tried reducing RAM speed and the system will not POST if memory slot 2 or memory slot 4 have memory installed.

I have tried the different RAM speed settings and it does not help.

Hi,

reading back through your posts you say that you have changed memory and Mobo's. Have you tried with a different CPU?

The problem could be a faulty Memory Controller and you might need to RMA the CPU.
