X58-UD7 with GTX285, no picture?
« on: June 12, 2010, 06:51:41 am »
Just built a new system based on the X58-UD7 and have a problem, I just get a black screen when I have my GTX285 installed.

So I tried to figure out what could be wrong and doublechecked all the hardware, removing RAM stick by stick etc. etc. and finally I
got a hold of a 8400GS card, switched to that one and voila I have a picture on my screen, so I thought that GTX285 must be defect....

Ordered a new GTX285 and put that in the box....but NO same problem again, no picture!

With the first GTX285 the normal error code sequence went through and stopped on FF but no picture, with the new GTX285 the error sequence stops at 26.

There seems to be some kind of signal though, because the screen goes in and out of power save mode.

Please help my I'm going crazy! :)

Thanks!!

Please don't take offence but you have remembered the extra power plugs on the card?

Try swapping the monitor to the other output port on the 285.

What sort of PSU are you using with the 285?
Raven RV03 / Gigabyte G1.Sniper / 990x / 12GB RAM / 3 x 580 GTX / 2 x 250GB 510 & 3 x 160GB X-25M Intel SSDs / Antec HCP 1200W

^^ This :)

Unless you card is faulty, there can't be any BIOS issue here, I know many people using GTX275/280/285/295 with the UD7 without a hitch.

You have put in 2x 6-pin + 1x 2-pin correct?

Can you please tell us what you PSU is btw also?

Yes, the two 6 pin power are in place, the 2 pin SPDIF out I don't use.

I have a Fractal Design Newton R2 650W.

What slot are you using and what is it set to in the BIOS? Maybe try using another slot(x16) and see if the same problem occurs.

Do you have a buddy with a stronger PSU to yours that you could check your system with? Seems like the card is not getting enough juice to me.

Tried different slots, the two LEDs on the card are all green saying it has power, but maybe not enough then.

No buddy with a PSU but I think I can solve that.

If the LEDS on the card are showing green, it should be fine. Remember to simply boot, almost any reasonable PSU will work, irrespective of the fact it might fall over in 3D mode. Any initial "surge" isn't going to impede it :)

Have you verified this GTX285 is actually 100% working?

If not, next step would be test it on any other machine I suspect, since you already know an 8400 works, thus your LCD + cables are fine.

"irrespective of the fact it might fall over in 3D mode. Any initial "surge" isn't going to impede it" what do you mean by that, english isn't my native language... :)

No, it's not verified but could 2 different GTX285 really fail? One Palit and one Gigabyte.

EDIT: Now I've also tried with an old ATI 2600 card, worked!

The real difference between the working setup and the non working is the cards so that makes me think that it could well be a power problem. Have you tried a more powerful PSU yet?

Unless the PSU you have is faulty, it won't help much, at GTX285 system is lucky to draw 350w flat out, and I am sure Fractal didn't stick you with a generic piece of crap, in other words it will have sufficient power on 12v rails for sure.

I have no idea who is OEM for the Fractal units, probably Seasonic like the XFX, Arctic units.

If you could write down here the UL number (and any other numbers / info) on the unit I can find out for you.

Well...I had a go with another one just to make sure, a Corsair HX 650W and like you wrote the problem remains...aaahhh I'm going crazy! :)

What could possibly be wrong??

Error code still stops at 26.

Well I must admit I am running out of ideas. You seem to have covered everything under normal circumstances that would cause your problem. I wonder if it is possible as venganza suggests that both cards are faulty? Do you have the BIOS set to PCIEX16_1 in Ini tDisplay First for booting the graphics?
