Me too :(

Yes it set to PCIEX16_1

The first GTX285 card works fine in a other system, got that confirmed today.

I'm taking the system apart as I write this, removing piece by piece and see what happens

Really wierd! ??? I will keep my fingers crossed that you find something simple when you have dismantled it but please let us know anyway if you can get to the bottom of it.
Best of luck.

Yes it is!

Still no picture with one ram stick and no HDDs or optical devices connected.

Could there be something wrong with the 16x pcie slots?

Or does a GTX285 connected even trough 8x pcie show a picture?

Error code 26 says, according to this thread http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=218840

26 Reserved/Unused (but in the manual it says the following: 1. if early_init_onboard_generator is not defined onboard clock generator initialization. Disable respective clock resource to empty PCI & DIMM slots. 2.init onboard PWM 3. init onboard H7W monitor devices)

Error code with the FIRST gtx installed stopped at FF, this is what is says about FF if you have no picture:

FF booting (from Int 19h) [If the Debug LEDs show FF but the Display stays black, possibly combined with one long and two short beep codes, check the detailled description of POST code 2b on the top]

then on to 2b:

2b
When the system powers on and the Debug LED shows the usual POST code sequence but hangs on 2b or you get a beep code as soon as the sequence reaches 2b, then the Mainboard cant detect your Videocard properly. Note that the POST code sequence might not halt at 2b but continue, so the final POST Code it displays could be FF, 00 or 7F which means the Maiboard booted, entered BIOS, or OC recovery kicked in and is waiting for Input to enter BIOS. Since the Videocard couldnt be detected properly you will only see a black Monitor and either 2b, FF, 00 or 7F. Check if there is something wrong with the Videocard, the PCIE slot or BUS, the Monitor or monitor cable. Turn the Monitor on and off, switch the Monitor cable from one D-SUB or DVI plug to the other in case your Videocard has two. If this doesnt help then reboot and load the optimized defaults. If that doesnt help either try another Videocard if possible, or try the Videocard in another system to make sure its working properly. Try another monitor or try the Monitor on another System.

Well I must admit I am running out of ideas. You seem to have covered everything under normal circumstances that would cause your problem. I wonder if it is possible as venganza suggests that both cards are faulty? Do you have the BIOS set to PCIEX16_1 in Ini tDisplay First for booting the graphics?

I don't get it either :)

Setting "Display First" won't matter, it will still poll all (PEG should be 1st anyway PCI Express).

Normally I would say "check the bloody cable" but we know an 8400 works, and I presume the OP has made sure the card is properly seated (using SCREWS of course, since I have found some cards will "unseat" due to weight using screwless crap).

I will need to think more on this, I wonder if either CPU or MOBO are flashed to latest updates, and could there be an issue, similar to prior issues with certain cards like the 9800GTX+ etc?

Gonna buy a cheap 8400GS today, just to play around more in bios.

It's bios F5 and I think F6 is available as well.

Forgot to mention that this is gonna be a Hackintosh machine and when I had the 8400 installed I went through
with the OSX install and I put the GTX285 in the box next to the 8400 and OSX "half" recognized it as a Nvidia card
in a 16x slot but not much more than that.

Thank you sooo much for your help guys!

I am afraid I was jsut grasping at straws! I also considered the check the cable but as you say it works with another card. Both the card and board are PCIe2
On the BIOS setting the only option in  my BIOS is as I described there is no PEG/PCI as I would have expected.

Update your bios and set it to load optimized fault. See how that goes. Also do NOT use @BIOS to update, use Qflash.

BIOS updated and I run optimized defaults but still no picture.

I'm thinking right now that maybe the card is defect though the first GTX285 I used went to FF (boot) in the code sequence
and this one stops at 26.

Writing this on the system with a new 8400GS card installed...

That wouldn't matter, PEG (PCI Express) or PCI whatever, it would all be polled :)

I am at a total loss, it just has to be the GPU itself, I would be testing it in another machine asap.

The card seems to be defect, no picture in my father's computer either. :(

I just don't get it...no picture at all with the first Palit GTX285 and the retailer
of that card claimed that it worked when they got it back.

Well I'm not giving up, sending the Gigabyte card back tomorrow and hope they
can get me a new one.

Ah, so you didn't actually see the original card working then :-\ Maybe the  retailer was telling "porkies" and hadn't even bothered to test it. I'm afraid they are not all as concienious as we would like to expect.

Let us know how you get on with your new card when you get it. I would be most interested to see if everything works as it should do from the outset.
