X58A-UD7: problem with Marvel SATA3
« on: June 13, 2010, 02:18:45 am »
Hi all, i recently ot a system with a gigabyte X58A-UD7 at the heart of it and 2 x WD 600 Sata3 velicoraptors.

Tried to configure a mirror using the marvel SATA3 interface - one drive just keep dumping itself out of the virtual disk (for no apparent reason). even if i try and use the disks with no RAID on the SATA3 controller - one wont show up in the OS.

If i plug both drives into SATA2 ports.... away they go...

Is this just me? Anyone else run into similar issues?

Hi,

It's not just you, there does seem to be an issue with the Marvel controller and SATA 3. There are several post on this forum and a wider search on the net will reveal that Marvel ain't that good.

Most people have found that SATA 2 is actually faster, go figure that one. However in non-raid configuration they seem to work OK and are faster than SATA2.

Yes absic is correct, the SATA6 Marvell ports are actually slower than the ICH10 SATA2 ports so if you want to run a RAID configuration I would connect them up to the Intel ports.

Another problem??? So, SATA6 Marvell ports are useless (not up to the specs)? OMG...

Marvell has been known as a c**p company for some time now so we shouldn't be suprised when their SATA6 chip doesn't measure up. My only beef was that Gigabyte decided to use it on their board, to be fair I don't think there was a lot of options at the time. However that doesn't dismiss them from getting something done about it, new drivers etc.

It looks we do not get what we've paid for the motherboard. If I know this it's better to get a lower range of motherboard... :(

i have also problems with all Marvell ports

88SE6145 not solved at his time : port multiplier with time out , unusable

MRU incompatibility with 88SE6145 and in same time 88SE91xx ( BSOD )

88SE9128 not use RAID 5 or 10 , only 2 RAID 0 or 1

however Marvell doc  indicate this modes OK

and i am sure because HighPoint use  this component 88SE9128 with this options available

**
I think that Marvell is a good company , provide components and tools to the map productions

with a simple developpement kit and some simple exemples

**

HighPoint use this for make a good BIOS / WEB Raid Management with the same developpement tool

RR622 HighPoint card is very similar , use same chip , eeprom serial , xtal and buffer amplifier and  nothing different

the others company are bad because use only the base tools and develope nothing, are satisfied to recopy that  they found in the basic tools of Marvell !!

**

that is my opinion but this is sure because HighPoint make good products with same components , why not the others company ?

**
Pierre

Hi Pierre
I think that I get your drift but the English is not perfect( although I am not knocking it in any way as I am sure it is one hundred times better than my French!) I don't know why the company went with Marvell as opposed to Highpoint especially as they are more reputable. Hopefully though new drivers etc will be released in the future to make all these things work the way they are advertised.
