intel storage and olde raid one from old machine
« on: December 05, 2017, 04:21:38 pm »
hi

I have a 2tb raid one from my old gigabyte motherboard that had intel storage apps.

I want to move it to my new auros 7 x299 board, which also has the intel raid apps

Can it be moved?  Do I just plug the 2 2tb drive4s into sata ports and go into uefi raid program and select them?  Or should I get windows up and go into intel windows program to do it.

They are just data drives....Thanks

Greetings,
Missed this post.  Just got a PM from one of the mods.

A few quick questions:

-Do you have access to the existing mirror?
-Do you have the data backed up?
-If not, is it possible to make a back up? (I'd recommend doing this)

So tell us about the "old" board.

-What controller were the disks connected to?
-Was it Legacy? (Specifically) Did you configure the RAID set within BIOS (UEFI RAID) or in the RAID Config Utility) "ctrl+I" legacy mode.

RAID 1 is typically resillient.  Answer the questions above and we'll go from there.

i have the 2 disks, the power supply fried.  Turned it off going on vacation, power up  restarts every 4 -5 seconds...The disks are ok,

Old system was raid 1 done in ami bios, on a x99 gigabyte board with bios setup, not uefi.  The bios had uefi, but it wasnt in use.

How would i backup the disks now?  Possibly use one disk , plug in and backup drive?

Greetings,
I personally would try to back up the drives.  Its an extra step, but if its possible to preserve data, its time well spent.

Do you have an OS installed on the new board yet?  The controllers operate mode will need to be set as RAID.  You will not set the RAID members in BIOS, only set the operate mode.

If multiple restarts occurred after the old PSU failed, even a RAID 1 can become broken or degraded

Steps:
Try to back up drives
Set controller operate mode to RAID
Install OS
Install Intel IRST Drivers
Shut down

Next steps depend on the state of the RAID

The drives can now be connected to the board
Start up - you might see a message that an array has been detected, but is operating in a degraded state
When you start for the first time, press ctrl+I and let the legacy RAID Config utility load
What you want is for the disks to be identified on the first page "Disk / Volume Information
One will be "marked" as master, one as "mirror" and RAID1

(Informational) Disks are "marked" in order to be members of a RAID set.  "unmarked" disks is what allows standalone drives connected to controller with its operate mode set to RAID not be included in a RAID set.

If you see this, I'd exit the utility, boot into the OS and open the IRST Manager.  It will immediately prompt you to rebuild the degraded RAID mirror.  This takes 1-4 hrs usually.  Its all automatic.

If the RAID does not appear, try selecting option 4. Recovery Volume Options
If the disks are readable, one should be identified as master

Option 4 allows a RAID 1 to be rebuild in the RAID Configuration Utility, similar to what happens in the OS.

This is a safest steps given what we know of your set up.  What you do not want to do is select option 1.  Create RAID Volume.  This will write metadata to the disks and destroy data.

yes, os is installed and i do have the intel storage gui program in windows

How do I backup the drive on the raid 1?  Cqan i just load 1 of the disks to back it up?

Can I plug one in of the raid 1 and just copy it to a new raid i can load also, ie, put one of the old drives, back it up and then put in 2 more disks, use intel storage program to build a new raid 1, then copy data to the new raid.

The system raid is on, i am using a 32g m.2 sata and a new 2tb windows disk, so optane raid is installed.

Careful you don't introduce too many variables while trying to recover your RAID1.  That's a "busy" system now.  I probably would use something like a USB toaster with back up software like Macrium or Acronis run from a boot CD/USB stick. If the system is up, you can also use a toaster and connect the disk to see if it can be mounted and read.  A Linux Live CD would also be a good option.  You might be able to copy data directly from the drive.  Again, there is no way to know given the type of failure the old system suffered.

For future, a back up of the data would have avoided all of this.  You would simply create the new array and restore the data or full disk image from back up.  Always implement a back up solution.  Never trust data to your hardware, it always fails.  RAID (any level) is not failsafe regardless if the level you chose has redundancy.  Hope you will have success.
