Z270P-D3 + i57600K display issues
« on: May 27, 2018, 08:32:35 am »
Since building the system over a month ago, I've not managed to get anything approaching a working build.

Despite upwards of 20 fresh installs of W10, every time the on board graphics driver is updated the same issue occurs (using the MS basic display adapter, the display works fine). As soon as the graphics driver is updated, the display goes haywire and is irrecoverable.

See https://youtu.be/6N3uympopB0 - this is what happened immediately after doing a manual install of the Intel Graphics HD630 driver (which is the one recommended by Intel for this processor). This happens every time the graphics driver is updated from the MS Basic Display Adapter.

I have also let W10 find appropriate drivers and update automatically with the same result.

Is this a faulty chip or mobo? Or is there something else I need to try?

I tried a workaround (installing my K2200 and forgetting the on board graphics), but there are numerous other issues with this build, and not freezing on boot when the K2200 is installed is one of them.

...the display goes haywire and is irrecoverable.

Greetings,
I watched your video.  Instead of beating your head against the wall...  please start using System Restore and/or Windows back up, Macrium Reflect, etc...  in order to keep from having to reinstall your OS from scratch during troubleshooting.

System Restore will have you back in business in 2 minutes.  Any of the Back Up software with in 8 min.

A few questions and a few suggestions:

What type of display are you using?
How is it being connected?
Are you using any adapters?
Is the RAM on the QVL from your board?
Are you over clocking memory and CPU?
Do you have another display to test with?
If you load set up defaults (in BIOS) current system state, does the behavior continue? (Quadro removed)
Is there anything else installed or connected to the board that is not listed in your specs?
What BIOS rev are you using?

My initial though was driver incompatibility, but believe it or not, memory can also cause this type of behavior.  However, since it works up until the point you change the driver, problems with memory is unlikely.

Confirm you have the latest Chipset .inf drivers installed before testing different graphics drivers.  The one here will be fine:

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z270P-D3-rev-10#support-dl-driver-chipset

What graphics driver are you using?

This one is about 5 days old:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27803/Graphics-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10?product=80939

If you have tried this one, try an earlier one.  There are 3 earlier versions here:

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z270P-D3-rev-10#support-dl-driver-vga

But get some kind of back up or system restore going so you don't have to continually reinstall.

Hi shadowsports, thank you so much for the reply!

About system restore- I have tried this and found that it worked only a few times. Most times, I would try restoring to a particular point and the restore itself would fail with error 0x81000204. Occasionally I have got system restore to work.

Display - I have tried 2 displays: one display an LG TV, the other an Asus Pro art monitor.
Connection - HDMI. This is the only option I get with the on board graphics.
Adapters - none
The RAM isn't on the QVL from Gigabyte, but it is listed as compatible by Crucial (who make the Ballistix Sport range)
I'm not overclocking at all
The behaviour is the same with BIOS defaults
The only other thing connected to the board is the USB headers from the case
I am using F7 BIOS (the latest is F8).

I have updated the chipset drivers.

I have tried the latest driver on top of a completely fresh install of W10 (with only the chipset drivers updated and Intel Management Engine Interface installed) and I get the same condition. This time, I attempted system restore (which completed successfully), but as W10 was starting post system restore, the graphics again went haywire.

What are the chances this is a mobo or processor issue? I've tried so much now that I'm into RMA territory.

Greetings,
A faulty CPU or board is possible, but you said it works normally until a graphics specific driver is introduced.

What's curious however is your hit or miss experience with System Restore.  It doesn't "sometimes" work.  Its both a reliable and effective method for returning the system to a previous point in time.

Do you have a different HDMI cable you can test with?

Can you test with different RAM?

With the system is a "failed state".  Please open a administrative command prompt and run "sfc /scannow" and post the results.

Does the behavior occur in BIOS?  Example, you add the driver, display goes haywire", you restart and enter BIOS and let the machine run?

Also, when the behavior occurs...  what is the resolution and refresh rate the graphics are trying to run at?

I'm still hesitant to say its RMA time as the system seems to run normally until a software change is made.  But you're likely in the best position to determine of this is hardware or software related.

Hi again Shadowsports,

Sorry for the late reply. Been enjoying using my new computer :)

I tested with different RAM, and this turned out to be the culprit. The RAM I was using was on the QVL, actually. Got another 2 sticks the same, replaced them in the board and... bang, fixed. Succesfully running the latest version of the Intel HD Graphics 630 with no problems.

Chatting to a mate who's an IT professional, he says that it's possible that the RAM sticks were incompatible with each other- which is why it's generally sold in pairs (I bought mine as 2 individual sticks). The replacement I bought were 2 individual sticks too, but I guess I got lucky.

Many thanks for your suggestion, it saved me pulling any more of my hair out!
