GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 - USB 3.0 prformance
« on: November 20, 2018, 09:20:36 pm »
An old system I know - but works.....

Mobo: GA-Z68X-UD5-B3
CPU: i7-2700K overclocked to 4.50GHz
Firmware : F10 (latest)
Bios setting : USB 3 Turbo : DIsabled [slows with it enabled]
OS: Win 10 Pro (1803)
Ram: 32Gb
Various card readers/hubs plugged in to USB 3 - but no cards installed/ anything copying while doing these tests
Else only mouse plugged into USB 2 connector.

I don't think my USB 3 performance is what it could be.....
It would be good to get it quicker since I do lots of photo editing where speed is handy.

Speeds on CrystalDIskMark 5:

Sony XQD reader + 128GB XQD G-series card (R:440 MB/s / W : 400MB/s)
Read ~ 133MB/s
Write ~ 33MB/s

SAndisk Extreme SSD 1TB (Portable-USB - USB-C with adapter cable) (R: 550MB/s)
Read ~ 280MB/s
Write ~ 190MB/s

BUT when I try them on my Dell XPS 13 laptop (USB3 A):

XQD card:
Read ~190-244MB/s
Write~ 18-37 MB/s

Sandisk SSD:
Read ~ 440MB/s
Write ~ 428 MB/s

I show the laptop speeds to show that the XQD + SSD can perform quicker connected to USB 3.0 A (not USB-C)

So 3 queries :

1. Can I get quicker USB 3 performance on my desktop PC somehow ?
[I'm expecting this is unlikely - tried re-installing drivers etc, Gigabyte only has Win 7 USB 3 drivers]

2. If the Desktop can read ~ 280 on the SSD, why is it only reading the XQD at ~ 130 MB/s when it can do quicker

3. Could I buy a USB 3/C card and get quicker USB performance ?
All my PCI slots are free other than graphics card in PCIEX16 slot

Good ole' SandyBridge.

Just a few comments.

You should always connect devices directly to the a USB port to achieve maximum speed.

Using hubs of any kind powered/un-powered can create issues or degrade performance.

Devices do not all negotiate at the same speeds (throughput).  The chipset in the device, the host and the drivers being used, together can all affect performance and bandwidth.

Some devices work better with others.  Some don't.

You aren't doing anything wrong.  This often comes down to hardware, drivers and and compatibility.

I only occasionally use one hub - built into the monitor (so mostly for reach convenience) and rarely use both ports the same time.

I tested speeds using the different connections (Back-panel; Monitor hub; front-panel/card reader) - all were roughly similar.
