Gigabyte Gamer 3 ERP Function problem
« on: January 14, 2019, 12:38:05 pm »
If I enable ERP in BIOS, then shutdown Windows with Fast Startup enabled, when I go to boot back up, power comes on, then shuts down, then fires back up and I get an error message from BIOS "Boot failure".

If I disable ERP in BIOS, then shutdown Windows with Fast Startup enabled, it boots up again fine + if I disable Fast Startup and enable ERP, it boots up fine.

I have tried clearing the CMOS, updating the BIOS.

Any ideas anyone?

ErP has dependencies to function.  Its based on hardware.

"Fast Startup" is a software feature.  Although "start up" is in its name, only shutdown is controlled.  The "faster" start up is a result of what occurs after a shutdown operation.  "Fast Startup" is a hybrid combination of hibernation and shutdown that can give you a slightly faster boot.

Depending on your hardware which you have not shared, and your OS, also which you have not shared, there might be compatibility issues.

In some ways the two are somewhat contradictory.  I would suggest leaving ErP disabled and using Fast Startup.

Spec:
Gigabyte Gamer 3 1.0 Motherboard
32GB Memory (DDR3)
NVIDIA GTX560 graphics card
Windows 10 Home
Corsair HX1000i PSU

The Fast Startup/Shutdown used to work okay with ERP enabled, only recently without any hardware changes that it has stopped working. The only thing I have changed is the PSU, upgraded from a Tagan 800W to Corsair 1000W.

Tried updating the Graphics card drivers, but still the same.

I wouldn't expect a video driver to have any affect.  The power supply yes, but am surprised that a Corsair PSU (which I use exclusively) wouldn't seem to support it.

ErP is almost a marketing "gimmick".  Offering only pennies of savings.  Its not like the life of your hardware is going to be dramatically extended.  Reduces power consumption to <1w.  Lose PME Event Wake Up, Power On By Mouse, Power On By Keyboard, and Wake On LAN.  While I don't use any of these features, knowing that the USB bus on my MB is still receiving power when off is not something I spend even a minute thinking about.

"Broken" now with your current hardware doesn't mean much as it could get "fixed" and start working in your environment later.  There are just to many hardware variables.
