B450M DS3H Memory problem

B450M DS3H Memory problem
« on: February 27, 2019, 11:15:42 pm »
I a getting one long beep and three short (or maybe 2 short, but think its 3).  I am using a single stick of Crucial 16GB DDR4-2400 UDIMM.

The manual only talks about 2 or 4 sticks.  Is this why it does not work.

Regards,
Ben

Greetings,
Memory requirements differ based on the CPU.  Summit, Raven or Pinnacle Ridge

Dual Channel mode is recommended, that's not to say the system couldn't boot (with one stick) in some circumstances, but I wouldn't waste time trying to figure out what works and what doesn't.  It's not designed for this.

Memory should be matched (brand, size and spec) and should be on the QVL for best results.

For reference:

Dual Channel Memory Configuration
This motherboard provides four memory sockets and supports Dual Channel Technology. After the memory is installed, the BIOS will automatically detect the specifications and capacity of the memory. Enabling Dual Channel memory mode will double the original memory bandwidth.
The four memory sockets are divided into two channels and each channel has two memory sockets as following:
Channel A: DDR4_2, DDR4_4
Channel B: DDR4_1, DDR4_3

Due to CPU limitations, read the following guidelines before installing the memory in Dual Channel mode.

1.  Dual Channel mode cannot be enabled if only one memory module is installed.
2. When enabling Dual Channel mode with two or four memory modules, it is recommended that memory of the same capacity, brand, speed, and chips be used. For optimum performance, when enabling Dual Channel mode with two memory modules, we recommend that you install them in the DDR4_1 and DDR4_2 sockets.

Recommend that you populate 2 slots and use QVL RAM

On an aside.  1 long beep with 3 short.  That's No VGA detected.  1 long and 2 short is the same.  Solve your RAM issue first and see if this remains.

Just to add to what Shadowsport has already stated, you can only use the onboard graphics with the correct CPU. If you are using a Ryzen 5 or 7 you will need a dedicated GPU to get the system to boot.

Also, when posting with an issue like this one, it would be really helpful, to those of us trying to assist, if you also posted your full system specifications as without it, we are groping in the dark a little. 😉
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.
