B360M HD3 Ubuntu 19.04 shutdown

I recently had a hardware failure on my old B75M-D3H motherboard. I replaced the mobo/CPU/RAM with the B360M HD3 mobo, i5 8400 CPU and Kingston HX426C16FB2k2/1 (2 x 8GB) DDR4 RAM. I use integrated graphics.

I retained the SSD (Ubuntu 19.04 set up for legacy BIOS) and HDD (data). I have selected legacy BIOS on the new mobo.

The system booted up immediately and works well. However, although the system will reboot normally, it does not shut down. The system reaches "target Power-off" and the fan speeds noticeably reduce but the system does not switch off. Every few minutes I see a message starting
"INFO:  task systemd-shutdow: 1 blocked for more than 120 seconds "

There is presumably some incompatibility between the linux kernel and the BIOS or BIOS settings. Can anyone help?

Linux compatibility is not guaranteed.

No reason to think it wouldn't work with your existing hardware.  However, you did not perform a fresh install of the OS and this type of migration doesn't always work.

Might be related to a driver, the different hardware or BIOS revision.  I'd suggest making a backup image of the system partition, and performing a fresh install.  See if the behavior follows.

If it does, you can easily restore the previous image and look for the issue elsewhere.

Hi shadowsports, thank you for your response. I have been trying a few things to try and resolve this problem, so far without success. Most notable was booting the system from a live Ubuntu USB stick. This works OK but there is again a problem shutting down. It shuts down eventually but not immediately as it usually does. As it happens, I have an old Gigabyte notebook (Q1105M) and this boots and shuts down correctly with the live USB drive.

The above leads me to believe that reinstalling the system will not solve the problem.

I know linux compatibility is not guaranteed but I have been using Gigabyte mobos with Ubuntu for the last 12 years and find it difficult to believe there is now some incompatibility.

A new BIOS update is now available to fix an Intel security issue. I have now updated my machine and it shuts down correctly  . So, either my old BIOS was corrupted in some way or Gigabyte have fixed this problem.
