SSD NVMe on GA-Z97-D3H it's possible?
« on: September 05, 2019, 03:13:30 pm »
My GA-Z97-D3H rev 1.1 have a M2-SSD conector but don't says what is the exact type of the M2 SSD. I only know that it supports 10 Gbps data transfer. Then, obviously, NVMe drives is not suported, right?

Then, i want to put a NVMe drive by an PCI-E adapter like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Orico-Pci-E-Express-M-2-M-B-Key-Interface-Ssd-Expansion-Card-M-2-Nvme-To-Pc-F1G5/283437856613?epid=10030437063&hash=item41fe367765:g:G9kAAOSwTGBconPI

My question is if it is possible to use this and if the BIOS can start system trought this adapter.
I think so, because I put a PCI-E X1 adapter to spand SATA ports and I can boot in this SATA ports normally.
The only drawback is that booting via PCI-E adapter SATA ports is that booting takes longer because there is a delay in detecting plugged in devices.

Sorry my poor english.

Greetings,
NVMe is not natively supported on Z97 (Gigabyte) boards.  This support has to be in the BIOS.

Been a while this this was discusses or asked. (Bear with me)  :P

If I recall, another forum member here added support for it in a custom BIOS.

Ya...  regit…  https://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=16870.75

Maybe reach out to him?

I personally do not use modded BIOS, but as long as you know the risks, that's up to you.

Using Add-In cards....  Can be hit or miss.  Some might work depending on chipset, BIOS rev, and others might not.  As you said however, a boot delay is likely during the detection phase.

I don't personally recommend personally don't use modded BIOS, but at this juncture, the Z97 is old enough now that
