X570 Aorus Xtreme - 10Gbps Aquantia NIC randomly disappearing
« on: September 28, 2019, 01:36:06 pm »
Hello,

BIOS: F5b
MB: X570 Aorus Xtreme

Using Windows 10 1903, the 2nd integrated network card Aquantia 10 Gbps randomly disappears from the system.
The only way to fix this is to shutdown the system and completely cut the power for ~1 minute.
Found another user with an older Gigabyte motherboard having the same problem here: http://forum.gigabyte.us/thread/5578/aorus-xtreme-aquantia-10gbe-recognized

At the moment I am still waiting for my 10 Gbps switch, so I am using the Intel 1 Gbps network card, but this kind of behavior would would really ruin my day when I will be actively using the 10 Gbps NIC.

Anyone experiencing this also?

Thank you.

What comes to mind is disable that adapter's sleep mode (device manager) and see how it fares..

Will do.

On the topic of Aquantia AQC107
To not open another topic on the matter, in case someone has the same problem:
DO NOT use the driver 2.1.18.0 from aquantia.com website.
Tried it. Most websites load just fine. Speed is great but a few websites just don't load at all.
Debugged this for the last several hours in vain only to discover that installing the latest driver from gigabyte product page fixed the problem.

Might also be the cause for the nic disappearing. Time will tell.

later edit:
It seems I spoke too soon.
The network card did not disappear, but still, I cannot connect to some services, for example my TeamSpeak3 server.
After many trials, I pinned down the problem to "tcp/udp checksum offload" for IPv4. Disabling it fixes the problem with connecting (UDP) to my TeamSpeak3 server.
Enabling the setting again results in loss of connectivity to the server. Tried it 5 times to be sure :)
No clue if it is from Aquantia drivers, Windows or a hardware problem.

Hope this helps someone.

Deepcuts,
Excellent work.  Sounds like a drivers issue.  The issue seems to be ongoing with several people reporting the problem/behavior and no apparent solution. Also appears to be a good number of drivers available too, but none fix the issue.

If not already done, you might want to open a ticket with support.  Not because I think they can fix it for you quickly, instead so they have record of it.

Btw, this board is a $grand+ here in Ostraya and they put a mediocre Marvell/Aquantia controller on it? I would have expected an Intel Network controller especially for this money.

That's why I stay away from new hardware releases for at least 2 years until drivers have caught up

Happened again after a weird BIOS freeze.

@AgentFXA,
Agree with you fully.  Am having "like" issues with my last QNAP.  Came with 8GB or RAM, I installed 16GB more.  Had 24GB for about 3 weeks.  System did something weird, had to rebuild the RAID5 and restore from back up.  Now the system detects 24GB of RAM, but only lets me use 8GB. Dropped $1700 into this thing.  Have limited VM capability now.  To say I'm disappointed is like the Aquantia, an understatement.  Isn't even new tech, its mature and established.  Beyond frustrating.

Checked the error log (event viewer) for hints?
Since you got 2 Network adapters onboard disable one (or the other) and see - using here the i211 myself and it's solid

The only logs I can find after filtering for aqnic650 are:
Code: [Select]
GIGABYTE 10Gbit Network by AQtion AQC107 : Network link is lost.and
Code: [Select]
GIGABYTE 10Gbit Network by AQtion AQC107 : Network link has been established at 1Gbit/s Full Duplex.
Just now I rebooted and entered BIOS to modify the fan curves. Saved, restarted and poof: No more Aquantia nic.
Searching the web it seems more users are having the same issue, even with other Aquantia models on Asus boards.
The only thing in common: nic just goes poof.
I guess I am lucky. A power cut solves my problem. For others it seems the nic just disappears for good.

Opened a ticket with Gigabyte and Aquantia.
Aquantia wants me to send them a picture of the chip. Sent them a picture of the motherboard explaining that I have to dismantle the whole board to get to the Aquantia chip.
Will see.

I remember a similar issues back then with a Marvel Esata controller - sounds like this plague is still around

F30a BIOS and the problem is still present.
Just updating the BIOS makes the nic disappear.

Seeing that I might be the only one around here with this problem, I think just my board is problematic.
I guess I learnt to live with it by now, because dismantling the board to RMA is just to much work.

Hey,
Very sorry.  You've been at this a year and no real solution.  Its unfortunate driver support has been so poor.

Have you tried making a back up of your existing install and reinstalling a fresh copy of 1909 or 2004 from scratch?

Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with Windows.
The network card is absent from BIOS also when it happens.

That's a defect on a hardware level.  I would have returned the board at the get go.  I've been there before.  You hang on to it being hopefully optimistic (it will get fixed) but it never does.  Sorry.  Disappointing to spent your hard earned cash on something this problematic.
