Issues with new HP Z38c LED curved monitor

Issues with new HP Z38c LED curved monitor
« on: July 24, 2021, 07:48:47 pm »
I have a desktop setup based on a Gigabyte AORUS GA-Z270X Gaming 7 1151 7th Gen motherboard. I've been using a HP Z27 monitor connected to the Displayport of the motherboard for years without issue.

When the monitor was replaced with a HP Z38c curved monitor it has issues when connected using a Displayport cable, but not when connected using HDMI.  The problem with using HDMI is that it is limited to 30Hz refresh rate, rather than the native 60Hz that is available using a Displayport cable.  The issue shows itself as the screen regularly "blacking out" for a second or so, and with horizontal lines "flashing".  Sometimes, it might not happen for an hour or so, other times it might happen continuously over a short period of time.

The monitor has been replaced THREE times and all monitors have exhibited the same issue, so it doesn't appear to be a monitor hardware issue!

I have the latest Intel HD Graphics 630 driver installed (dated July) and the HP monitor information file.  I have tried 3 different Displayport cables, three different power cables and have also installed a Geforce GTX 980 dedicated graphics card, but got the same issue.

The current Displayport cable I am using is brand new and is 8K compatible @ 60Hz and 4K @ 144Hz, which is far in excess of what the monitor requires.

The HP engineer seemed to think the issue was likely to be with the onboard graphics, given it works with an HDMI cable (at readuced refresh rate).  I'm not so sure, but I really am at a loss as to what to do next to troubleshoot this issue.

Is it possible there are some "settings" relating to this motherboard and the use of Displayport that need to be changed?  A long shot I know!

Greetings,
Many factors in play here.

With the right cable, the DP should be capable of supporting the 38's native resolution and 60Hz refresh rate.  However, the 21:9 aspect ratio is a bit of an odd ball.  It might also be related to the electronics in the newer display.

The 980 should be able to drive the monitor without issues, but clearly what's passing the video signal is not what the new display is expecting.

Do you have the ability to try a different BIOS revision?

Have you opened a case with Gigabyte e-Support?

I purchased a Displayport (v1.2) to HDMI (v2.0) adapter.  This plugged into the displayport socket on my PC and then then one end of a 4K rated HDMI cable was plugged into the other end of the adapter, with the other end of the HDMI cable plugged into the Z38c monitor.

This works and I now get 3840x1600 @ 60Hz.

This is yet another indication that the displayport on the Z38c product does not work correctly, not just on the current monitor I have, but also on the previous 2 monitors I tried, suggesting there is an issue with this product that HP need to investigate.

I say this because when ANYTHING is plugged into the Z38c displayport I get blackouts and horizontal flashing.  This adapter is plugged into my PC displayport and clearly the signal from that works perfectly otherwise I would be getting issues through the HDMI cable also.

I agree.  Too bad as I'm sure its a beautiful display.  Happy you got it working @ 4k 60.  I'm sure it looks razor sharp.
