Motherboard not working at all!

Motherboard not working at all!
« on: July 24, 2010, 11:28:16 am »

Yesterday my new system arrived with the mail and i immediately set out to build it. After connecting everything i pressed on the power switch and guess what! nothing! No fans are moving, no lights are turning on, and no hard drive is booting. At first i thought it was the power supply(Corsair TX750w) but after testing it on my other system it worked superbly. I then disconnected everything from the motherboard but the most crucial parts you need to boot the system, namely, RAM, CPU, and graphics card. I tested it on both my power supply's(Corsair TX750w and Antec Earthwatts 500w) again nothing happened. I then did the same with my old system and everything worked as it should. So i am coming to the conclusion that my new motherboard is defective and that i have to RMA it IF you guys don't know of a solution to my problem.

My new system is:
Gigabyte 790XTA-UDU4( Bad motherboard)
AMD Phenom II X4 955
Corsair 4gb 1600mz memory
WS 500gb HD
Samsung Cd drive
Evga 9500 GT
Corsair TX750w Powersupply
Haf 932

Old system:
Older Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 model with Intel 775 socket
Intel Q8400
Evga 9500 GT
4gb Patriot memory
Samsung Cd drive
WD 250gb HD
Antec Earthwatts 500w
Thermaltake Case

Has any of you guys experienced anything like this before and if you have is there any solution to the problem or do i have to RMA.

Thank You

Hi & ouch, how annoying is that!  >:(

First off is your CPU the 125W C2 or the 95W C3?

if it is the 95W C3 then the problem could be due to the BIOS as you need F3 for that CPU.

Other thing to try is with just the CPU and HSF on  board and see what POST beeps you get. Also make sure that the CPU power plug is in place.

As the system won't boot it is going to be a bit difficult to flash BIOS.

Do you have a friend with a different AMD CPU, that is on the support list (check here: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=3263 ) that will work with the F1 BIOS?

If not you might need to RMA the board and ask your supplier to do the flash for you.

Even if he does have the newer CPU stepping there should still be something on the display I would of thought? I maybe wrong, but when I installed a CPU (it was an intel mind) on a gigabyte board where the BIOS did not support it. I still had something come up on the display, but it just said "CPU NOT SUPPORTED" (or something similar) from there I could still get into the Q-Flash and flash the latest BIOS

yes unfortunately i don't have any friends that are that much into computers so i will take your advice and ask them for a new board that they have flashed for me. Will call them on monday. Thank you for the quick response!

Yes it sounds more likely to be a faulty motherboard to me, though I maybe wrong as I have only had expierience with intel + non supported CPU BIOS revisions. But like I said, even if the bios does not support the CPU aslong as the hardware does - you should still get something on the monitor

EDIT: Also when you say you've tested the system with only the crucial parts, did you try with just 1 stick of ram and swapping it for the other stick? Also trying different RAM slots?

Hi,
what Oggmonster says does sometimes happen.
Even if you do not have the correct BIOS to support your CPU a message can come up. However, I have noticed in several of my more recent builds that this doesn't always happen and the system does what you are describing. ( I only build AMD machines so I'm not sure about Intel).

Unfortunately, without access to another CPU, we won't be able to prove if it is just a BIOS problem or not. As the motherboard is new and under warranty, I think it would be best to RMA it, especially as all of your other components appear to be working.

Ooh interesting, will have to keep an eye out for that!

It's caught me out a couple of times. Not sure why it does this and it would be so much easier if you could flash BIOS without a CPU or RAM installed.

Aha agreed, though if he can take it back to where he got it from and get them to flash it for him, that will eliminate (or possibly solve the problem!)

absic is entirely right the newer chip/motherboard/bios can be a pain in the *ss. If the BIOS version isn't new enough you just get nothing.
By the way oggmonster what is this "I can see Russsia from my house"? I have always wondered.
