Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 and 8GB RAM or more
« on: July 25, 2010, 09:57:27 am »
Hi all,

I would buy this motherboard to do some heavy VM work with an AMD X6 and a lot of RAM.
here the question : this mainboard will work fine with all the ram slot in use ?   ( with DDR3 1600 or DDR3 1333. )
there is some issue with more than 8GB ? i was thinking of 16GB (i know the memory controller limitation of 16GB)

here the ram that i see on QVL :

CMX8GX3M4A1333C9
Capacity 8GB (4 x 2GB)
Speed DDR3 1333
Timing 9-9-9-24
Voltage 1.5V

F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO --> F3-12800CL7Q-8GBECO (Favorite)
CAS Latency 7-8-7-24-2N
Capacity 4GB (2GBx2)
Speed DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800)
Test Voltage 1.35 Volts

F3-10666CL7D-4GBECO --> F3-10666CL9Q-8GBECO
CAS Latency 7-7-7-21-2N
Capacity 4GB (2GBx2)
Speed DDR3-1333 (PC3 10666)
Test Voltage 1.35 Volts

CMDGX3M4A1600C8
8Gb PC12800
1,65Volt
1600MHz
Cas 8-8-8-24 2T

i see on the QVL F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO but I think it still works even with F3-12800CL7Q-8GBECO because is the same model but with 4 pieces so i think it will work.

for the F3-10666CL7D-4GBECO module i see on G.Skill site that there isn't a 4x2GB with this CAS Latency 7-7-7-21-2N only 2x2GB, so the solutions are only two : i buy 2 pieces of this CAS7 or I take these other F3-10666CL9Q-8GBECO (2Gx4) that are the same brand ECO but with CAS Latency 9-9-9-24-2N .

the corsair CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 memory is a kind of Fully compatible choice of reserve because it is on QVL with this code so it must have tested very well.

the same for CMDGX3M4A1600C8 but they have a heatsink that hit my CPU heatsink so is the last chance.

So any advice ? it will work ? there is someone on the forum that have 8GB with this mainboard for have some advice for manufacter ?

Thanks for any replay.

Hi there,

I don't have your motherboard I run the GA-790XTA-UD4 with the Phenom ii X6 1090T and I am running 8 gig of RAM quite happily.

There does seem to be some issues with various CPU/Memory limitations and, in an effort to establish a better idea of what is happening I am going to be running some tests over the next few days with a couple of different CPU/motherboard combinations to try and find an answer to this question.

If you are looking for a solution that will give you 8 gig+ of RAM then my advice would be to stick with memory rated at 1333 Mhz as this is the native rating for the memory controller on the Phenom ii CPU's. If you want to improve overall speed then bumping the CPU up a bit, is actually a better way of doing things but, it would be better to have a decent cooler rather than the AMD supplied one.

Hi,

thx for the info. however my biggest doubt is if it work with all the 4 slot fullfill with DDR3 1600.
Because the manual says that for run more than 1333MHz DDR3 ram it will must be stick in the DDR_3 and DDR_4 slot.
So if i buy and use DDR3 1600 4x2GB, it will work ?

on the QVL list there is a DDR3 1600 8GB Kit, but i don't know if they have tested only 1 o 2 pieces or the have tested all the 4 pieces of RAM.

And from that comes my question, it will work ?

thanks for your advice however your mainboard is based on 790 Chipset, this one is based on 890 chipset, i think that there is some change in the memory management. But i'm quite concerned in your test results, so when you do it can you post on the forum ?

Thanks.

Hi,
I quite understand your concerns and you are doing the right thing by asking the question. Hopefully runn3R will be able to offer a definite answer for you.

I will be posting the results of my tests and will be starting a thread, with regard to this later on, so please check back for this.

16 GB was a bear to get stable at DDR1600
I could pass Mem86 easy on DDR1333.
As a fluke I tried it on a pure sine wave Battery back-up, the ONLY way I could pass mem86. I really believe the six-pack of Dead Guy Ale is what made it work @ DDR1600  ;)

I wonder how much stability can be attributed to the "cleanliness" of the mains power? I notice that you are using a Corsair HX850 the same as me and they are supposed to clean up the power a lot prior to passing it to the pc. All the same you say you couldn't get the memory to work until you used a power conditioner (UPS). I am running a large APC 1500 UPS system too and wonder how much that helps the stability.

Thanks for the reply.

then you're saying that this F3-12800CL9Q-16GBRL can work with this mainboard.
Ok but did you have any issue to make them work properly? some settings ?

with the ups they work properly  @1600 and without they work properly @1333 right ?

if i stick them in and use without bios setting's at 1333 CAS 9 they work right ?

sorry if you do all these questions, but I don't want to do a bad buy.

I only installed (2) sticks at 1st and I believe they came up as DDR3 1333 (667 Mhz) but at 9 across the board, 24T & 2T (auto/default).
With 2 sticks DDR3 1600 (800 Mhz) was easy, could even tighten the timing 8 8 8 8 24T 1T and pass mem86! Both dammed pairs to boot.
I kept the the 2 closest packaged sticks together and benched each at 800 Mhz at 9 9 9 9 24T 2T.
DRAM Voltage is set at Auto and it shows up as 1.510V.

Recommend stability testing 2 sticks at a time, these sticks can and do burn out if they get too hot from over-voltage of the DRAM V Control.

If your board comes with F1 (or F2) go straight to F3 and don't look back.

You will need to bump up the voltage in the NB VC (1.90 from 1.15V), CPU NB VID Control +0.75V & CPU V Control +0.05V) just to boot with 4 sticks @    667 Mhz, Changed to 800 Mhz and Default lose Timings at 11 11 11 29T 2T.
Kept getting errors within an hour or 2 on mem86, so I dropped it down to 667 and passed, then installed OS.

with the ups they work properly  @1600 and without they work properly @1333 right ?
Yeah, even I know this sounds like I'm full of it, but that six pack of dead guys ale could of helped, umm I really don't know.
My old OPTI 1500C just got a new battery and is hooked up to the HTPC. This is what I used when I hit the 800 Mhz quad stick wall. Could be the 3 year old battery was a cause. Well, it's was a biAtch to fit into the stand so testing now is not an option  ;)
At the same time I got the CyberPower PP1500SWT4 UPS and a few days later figured what the hay and 800 Mhz is where I'm at stable
To get there you will need to do heavy tweaking in the BIOS
if i stick them in and use without bios setting's at 1333 CAS 9 they work right ?
At default (load Optimized also worked for me) settings on the F3 BIOS is easy peasy as long as you bump the above mentioned Voltage Optimized settings.
F2 was bootable with 2 sticks ONLY.
At 1333 (Can't help it, I still call it what it is: 667 Mhz) I got the Timings to 9 8 9 8 20T 2T on  all (4) sticks and passed overnight. I believe I had to bump NB/PCIe/PLLto 1.860 from 1.800V.
The Timings will default at 11 11 11 28T 2T, this is by design. Not all sticks can dance the 800 Mhz dance, very few quad 4 GB sticks can do it with stability on tight timings.

I firmly believe a lot of HDW issues can be linked to dirty power. Most surge suppressors can only handle a few spikes, after a couple of large ones they just give false security. Basically, Corsair just put in larger caps to level the power. These caps do die from "dirty power"
All the same you say you couldn't get the memory to work until you used a power conditioner (UPS). I am running a large APC 1500 UPS system too and wonder how much that helps the stability.
Umm, I originally used my 3 year old the APC 1500C when first testing stability. I could do 800 Mhz with four sticks, but with loose timings and mem test errors. I now have a CyberPower PP1500SWT4 , this has pure sine wave which will use slightly more power as apposed to the standard AC pass-thru of most consumer Uninterrupted Power Supplies. Four 12 Amp batteries are not just for safe shut down, they are used for sharppening the sine wave so the power supply will not have to work as hard on the caps.
thanks for the helpful hints. ;)
now it's just a matter of budget.. :D
Ahh, pesky overhead...
1st off, if you can get away with 8 GB, your options (and ease of stability) will improve. VM on 8 GB is not too bad with 6 cores  ;)
I dropped obscene $$ on matched 16 GB set, and I fully expected to do 667 Mhz on the memory while hoping I could get tight timings.
I know I'm lucky so far...
