X58-UD7 rev2 with 980x & Corsair Dominator 1866 ram (6 or 12gb) hanging issues

Hi Guys

Not my system, but I am helping a pal , hence my wandering from the gigabyte amd pages.

Anyway the system appears to be fine, but hangs whenever any software that queries the chipset/cpu is running, including windows taskmanager.

sometimes the system recovers, others it goes completely.
My immediate thoughts were the ram Corsair Dominator 6gb Kits 1866mhz x2 , also tested with Corsair XMS3 ram (4gb kit)
everything passes tests, and for the most part the system is stable when playing games and doing general tasks.

it has an 1100W psu thats about a year old feeding it (again a corsair)

the system is much more stable once all the gigabyte software was uninstalled, but I am concerned that there is still a driver or bios issue.

current bios is FB, wondering if a new one is on the way.

Any insight greatly appreciated.

Cheers

They always say that. It doesn't matter now that you've seen the light just admit it. I won't tell absic.

Seriously I would advise checking the CPU socket pins for any bent ones. We have had quite a lot of them recently and that is just the sort of symptom that shows. Usually it's missing memory or falling over. I've not heard of any updates for the BIOS but you could always check on TweakTown as they seem to get the latest ones before us.

Hey Dark Mantis
I am still here posting from my trusty AMD 965/ Gigabyte FXTA-UD5 system :)
it really is a pal
now I didnt assemble the pc, but he tells me the UD7 board doesnt have pins but small mounds of copper,
all the i7's etc that I have assembled have pins on the motherboard so I think  he must be mistaken, but you suggest that there might be a bent pin, so thats worth a look

stability has been helped by uninstalling any system monitoring software, including energy saving stuff that comes with the board, in fact the latest thing to crash the machine was an Energy Saving service that was left behind,
also we think his house's power is not very clean because it was immediately more stable at my place, and since he switched off his big laser printer his has been more stable too. the system is drawing up to 985 watts from his domestic supply
the psu is 1100 so has a small bit of headroom

I will be seeing him at a lan party tomorrow so will give him your suggestions :)

many thanks for the thoughts

and I would come to the dark side (I mean intel side) but my spousal credit controller wont allow :)

The mounds of copper are on the CPU not the socket, that has pins. They are very small and are difficult to see clearly without a magnifying glass. The other way is to take some close up macro shots of them and then study them on your computer or upload them here and we can check them for you.
Are you sure his system is actually drawing 985W. That's one hell of a power drain. What has he got under the bonnet?
My commiserations on having such a difficult spousal credit controller. I know the feeling. :-\

cheers for the feedback, yeah I gathered he was confused about the bobbles of copper
anyway, he has an ATI 5970 dual gpu card, 12gb dominator ram, 980x i7, 8 hdd's a dvdrw drive and a corsair 1100w psu
it generally runs a lot lower than the 985 watts, but hits spikes on power, I have yet to monitor it myself though

we will be doing a re-assemble to check the pins

Cheers

not sure where he got the driver from, because the official page still has the same ones, unless he got inf files directly from intel.
but he said chipset.

bios not out yet of course, but I expect around mid October seems to be a bi-monthly thing.

This is hard to believe that you have a corsair PSU when corsair don't make a 1100W PSU.
