GTX 460 - No display!
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:32:21 pm »

Hello folks - its been a couple of days since I got my hands on my new Gigabyte GTX 460 (1 GB). This was supposed to be my big upgrade - moving up from my old ATI X1800 GTO video card. I have an ASUS P5NE SLI motherboard and have Windows 7 64 bit running on my system.

Problem is - no matter what I do, there is no display out of the GTX 460 card. I have been trolling the net in vain all day today after trying everything that my friend and I knew. We have verified that the entire rig works - I can still use my old Radeon X1800 GTO card and get into Windows.

Thinking that this might be because of an older version of the BIOS, I even flashed it to the latest BIOS version - 1406. Still no luck. And now we are out of ideas.

Oh and by the way the power supply is a Coolermaster GX 550 and it exceeds the minimum requirements for the card. Any help or thoughts are most welcome at this point......

Firstly that main thing that springs to mind is the PSU. Now I know you said it exceeds the power requirements but how long have you had it? After a while the power output drops as you get capacitor droop etc.

Well, I got it this Sunday :). So, there should be no power output drop or anything like that.

The thing is - with this same power supply the X1800 GTO boots up. Not that that card needs this hefty a power supply but still....

And now I am out of ideas - especially after the BIOS update, which I did after much hesitation.

It's just that it is the obvious solution to your problem. You have made sure that you have connected the cards power supply plugs?

Yes both the 6 pin connectors are plugged in. Any other thoughts?

What is the exact model number of the card?
Have you tried on the ASUS forum for your motherboard?

The exact model number is GV-N460OC-1GI.

And no, I have not gone to the ASUS forums. Partly because I have a bad feeling about the response (or lack thereof) from there. Last time I had issues with my ASUS Xonar D2X - I had to solve them myself. No support was forthcoming from there.

Well after a quick read of the manual there is nothing that stands out as the problem. However let's just check some details:

Have you made sure the card is firmly seated in the slot?

Are you sure that you installed the 64bit version of the drivers?

You have the card installed in the PCIe x16 slot?

The power connectors are fitted tightly?

What output are you trying to use? and what cables are attached?

Appreciate your effort sincerely, Dark Mantis.

Yes to all your questions. And I am using the DVI-D output. But I also tried out the mini-HDMI output - with the same results. In every case, the computer boots in and goes past the BIOS. My keyboard is fully responding. It is just that the display does not come up.

And with the same rig, the display comes up when I use my old ATI Radeon card.

The only other thing that may need doing is updating the firmware on the board. This should be available on the download section of the Gigabyte website.

Well, I have downloaded the latest version of the drivers - 258.96. But as far as I can see there is not much I can do with the file until I get the display running. Is that correct?

Also does the fact that I have been running an ATI card already on the rig have anything to do with this strange behaviour?

Ah! Have you cleared your CMOS and then loaded the BIOS optimised defaults? There is a FAQ on how to do it in the FAQ section of the forum.

Yes - when I flashed the new BIOS - the procedure made me do it. After flashing the bios I did reset everything to default.

Not just reset your BIOS. Clearing the CMOS is a different thing.
