That's absolutely crazy I can say I have never come across this before. I thought the power supply compatibility problem was bad enough but now there seems to be a monitor compatibility problem?   Thanks for the heads up anyway and glad you have sorted your problem.

I know! I have never experienced this with a MB before ever! Its weird but hey there it is, system working fine even with that 420w power supply in the standard case, but that said, this is a bare basics system, no graphics cards no add ons only running basic email office programs network printers so nothing much attached.

Thanks for all your pointers anyway, and glad to provide my little experience as useful info tucked away for a baffling moment.

I still fail to see how a monitor can disrupt a system. It has it's own power source and only relies on the stream of data from the graphics card/chip. The only possibility is the the drivers are at fault. Were they Windows drivers that were being used at the time?
