Gigabyte G41M-ES2L burned

Gigabyte G41M-ES2L burned
« on: August 21, 2010, 06:23:14 am »
I have a 3 day old Gigabyte G41M-ES2L ver. 1.1 motherboard ,At first day I had it boot then had to wait for day 3 before I got my Seagate 500gb
sata ,Upon the installation of windows XP I smell burnt in my cpu ,So I turned it off, open up my case and inspected my parts, At first I thought it was my silverstone st50f-230 PSU so I changed my psu to a corsair hx620 from another pc ,I tried to turned it on but to no avail. I again checked and smelled my other parts aside from the psu and upon closely inspecting my motherboard there were burn marks and broken pcb wire at the back of my motherboard. I returned it to the shop where I bought it but they cannot offer direct replacement as there were burn marks and have to be pulled out and send it to distributor and would be up for them to decide if they will replace it ,They said I have to wait atleast 1 month before I get an update from distributor and they said atleast 2 months if they would let Gigabyte decide. Yesterday I bought another motherboard and found out it also killed my Intel e5300 dual core processor  :'(

Just wanted to know if there are cases that are similar to mine and is there a chance my motherboard would be replaced?  :'(

It is not something that I can say happens very often at all on the forum here. Was there any reason that you could see for the burnt out tracking? It sounds like a short of some description but without closer inspection it would be hard to tell. Have you built any computers before or is this the first time? Sounds like really bad luck though.  :o

Hi,

Just like Dark Mantis, I have to say that in all my time of building PC's, I have never come across this before. The big problem you will have is proving that the Mobo was faulty and not that you installed it incorrectly. I'm not sure how the law works in your part of the world but in the UK we do have legislation that protects us a little from such issues but, we still have to show that we didn't do anything wrong

In answer to your question about your motherboard being replaced, if Gigabyte find there was a production fault when they test it, they would most probably replace it. If they say there is no fault then I guess you will have to mark it down to experience.  :'(

I agree with absic and I would add that I would want to know exactly what went wrong so I could make sure I didn't repeat the errror. I would probably take a lot of photos to back up any future claim that I might need to make.

Its not my first time to build a pc ,but its actually my first Gigabyte motherboard that I was building for my sister ,I bought a new board as I don't have the patience to wait a month to get an update ,with all the same parts except for a brandnew motherboard and borrowed processor from another pc. The shop which I bought from are very strict in not accepting bent pins/burns from motherboard ,but closely inspecting the motherboard and where the burn was located were kinda unusual for them and decided its the distributor that would decide if they would replace it ,if it was only a faulty board without the burns they would have replace it as they offered 7 days direct replacement if item found to be defective.

I'll just update 1 month from now and see what update i'll get from distributor or 2 months if distributor let Gigabyte manufacturer decide if i'll get a replacement. thanks all

System specification at the time of incident:
Intel e5300 dual core processor
Gigabyte g41m-Es2l version 1.1
Seagate 500gb sata
Kingston 2gb ddr2 6400
Silverstone st50f-230 500watts power supply

Well we will be interested to hear the outcome of this unusual fault. Can you say exactly where the track was burnt off the board?

Hey DM I just did an on-line check for the Power supply in the Philippines and if the info is correct it's 220V at 60Hz.

Isn't the internet useful!

Yes I know but it's Saturday morning and I'm struggling with some very Dark Arts and just needed the distraction!  :P
