X58A-UD3R - Triple memory 6GB not reported in Bios.
« on: August 29, 2010, 04:46:47 pm »
I have 6 Gb of Corsair memory bought as a 6 gb kit fitted to the GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard Rev 1.0
Bios does not report this it reports 4 GB but CPUID report 6 gb as does easy tune 6 .
How do I know if triple channel is up and running is there specific settings for this.

Memory is Corsair CMX6GX3M3A1600C9 3 x 2GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory

Does not seem to matter if I have XMP on or not.

Assuming that the memory is perfectly ok the only two reasons for this happening in the past have been either bent pins on the CPU socket or the BIOS needing updating.

As I have F5 bios from the web site that leaves bent pins and that worries me. Do you mean I have now to look at the cpu socket and actually remove the cpu and magnify the internal pin for problems?

Which will of course mean setting the cpu in new thermal compaund?

How bad do they have to be ?

I have swapped the memory around but still only the bios reports 4GB ram although 6gb ram is seen in both cpuz & easy tune which kind of negates the bent pin theory or does it.?

Would the F6 beta Bios be worth a try?

Let me clarify the Bios at boot reports memory as 4 Gb,On entering the bios itself it reports Extended memory as 4Gb but the bios shows the settings for all thre channels, which is the puzzle.

Well make sure that the memory modules are in the correct slots to run as triple channel(from memory 1,3,5 but check) and that it is selected as such in the BIOS. Leave the CPU socket for now as a last resort. It is more likely a BIOS issue. The other thing to try is download and run Memtest86+ on the memory modules one stick at a time and let it run several loops on each. If you get no errors then at least you know the memory is ok.

Since I last read your message I took out all memory inserted single stick in DDR3-1 bios reports 2gb.
If I insert a single stick in DDR3-5 it reports 2gb
If I insert a single stick in DDR3-3 the system will not start I get nothing.
If I inset a single stick in DDR3-1 and DDR3-3 then the system reports 2Gb or If I insert  in DDR3-3 & DDR3-5 it still reads 2gb but
If I insert sticks in DDR3-1 & DDR3-5 then bios reads 4gb it does seem as though DDR3-3 is not beeing seen in bios.

Does this Help.

GA-X58A-ud3r motherboard

I tried slot DDR3-4 but that failed to boot the system at all just fans run.
I stopped at this point as it looks like the middle set of ram sockets does not seem to be seen by the bios.

How ever running Belarc Advisor it sees the memory which is odd.

I have just checked to make sure your memory is compatible with the motherboard which it is , so no worries there.
I would try the F6 BIOS update because I have a feeling this was the same problem on another board(or even maybe this one) before and it was a BIOS issue. Might be worth doing a search of the forum for it.

I searched the forum about memory problems before posting could not find anything on this specific problem.

Will now try the F6 Bios but was reluctant to try Beta version. I needed F5 for the CPU I7-930
will get back when I have this done.

Even though the F6 is a Beta version it should be stable as it has been released onto the website.

I now have F6n version of bios running after some tweaking to get it to run.
Layout is different this time it reports slot 1, 3, & 5 with 2gb ram inserted but on next line it says enabled slot 1& 4 which shows 2 gb and total memory of 4 gb so its odd as there is no stick in slot 4.
wil have to try something else does seem as though it bios.
Surley this combination of 6GB memeory and CPU i7-930 cannot be unique.

You did remember to enable "triple channel" for the memory in the BIOS?
There are plenty of people running the i7 930 and triple channel memory of 6Gb.

That is a good question how do you do that the manual saysthe bios automatically recogises it from the insertion position in the slots.

Now I have a real problem as th enew F6n bios shows memeory module when inserted.
Insert a stick into DDR3-1 slot and it read 2048 in slot 1 and slot one enabled. next place a stick in slot DDR3-3 and it reads 2048 in slot 3 with slot enabled slot 4. system does not boot.
Place stick in DDR3-5 and it reads 2048 in slot with slot 5 enabled.

This got me thinking and I filled slot DDR3-2 & DDR3-1 with memory and I got 2048 in slot 1& 2 with memort  4GB and slot 1& 2 enabled.
Nest step I filled slot DDR3-5 with memeory and I got 6Gb memory with slot 12&6 enabled but it makes no sense at all.

wether this memory is ac ting as dual single or triple is a mystery atteh moment but I have the Bios reading 6gb ram with memeory 2048 each stick in slots 1, 2, & % these are the two nearest the CPU and one furthest.

Something is weird or the daa we have is wrong. But it certainly looks like bios is at the root of it all.

Very funny but let's see if we can work it out. I think that it can be sorted by the settings. Have you checked in the new BIOS if the setting for triple channel mode can be made manually?  Manual page 16 shows the positioning of the modules for single, dual and triple channel configurations see here: http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-x58a-ud3r_e.pdf

Check to see if any of the pins on the motherboard are bent that connect to the cpu.

Had a chap come in with same fault, it was a bent pin on the cpu socket and ruined his warranty on his EX58 UD7 mobo
