EX58-UD5 and D-link DWA-556 PCI-e
« on: September 07, 2010, 10:20:14 pm »
Hi,

I read few topics already here about it without any solution to it, as maybe someone finally get it and is willing to share it, Im gonna try.

I get my DWA-556 PCI-e card today, card suppose to work in either x1,x4,x8,x16 slots as posted on a box. As x1 slot is blocked mostly by GB radiator or something similar near CPU I cant plug card there (which will probably be working perfectly! - found such solution to similar problem with MSI mainboard) so I plugged card to each slots and tried to install it. No luck at all. My Windows 7 64bits cant find any unidentified device at all Im stuck with card that is totally useless for me and can't return it to get my money back.

Anyone is maybe familiar to such problem and maybe somehow know the solution to it? Please dont say "get a new card" as this cost me enough money/time to get it already.

For any information I would be glad!!
Micheal.

I am not familiar with this particular card but some prefer to have the software installed first and some afterwards. Have you tried using the Install Wizard to find the card?

Aye I tried to install software first then plug the card, but still "please plug your card to continue" which Im unable to do otherwise then I did. Im sure card is plugged properly as there is blinking green light (which suggest active/transmitting data) at the back of the card.  Seriously I feel like a 4y old kid which is looking at advance mathematics with a  ??? ::) "wtf!?".

Actually after doing some digging around about the card there seems to be a problem with getting it to work with Windows7 64bit. Do you have the right drivers on  the support cd?

I downloaded few:

- from dlink main page with "Win7 64/32bit" in it
- some atheros which suppose to work "fine" with it
- and few old ones from other pages (dlink drivers)

Nothing changes, nothing shows up..

In that case I would have to suggest that either the card is duff or that for some reason it will only be recognised in the PCIe x1 slot.

possible card bad because all pci-e cards can use all slots

If you have PCI-e X1 ( open ) you can also use PCIe-X16 card in a slot for PCI-e X1 !!

exemple : you can found X4 open for use X16 card to this :

For problem with GB radiator i have this REISER for use if my add-on card is not full high  :

i have also an adapter PCI-e X1 PCB male to female connector with 8 centimeters cable ...

Thanks for that insight Pierre,  the connectors could be useful. I was aware that any PICe card could be used in any PCIe slot as long as it physically fitted of course ;)

That's why I seriously confused, even box in which card came says "fit in any x1-x16 PCI-e slot". More strangely I dig up my old PC with GByte mainboard too, but there was alot of PCIe x1. As I plugged card there I didnt get anything detected, really pissed off I made my last chance and plugged it into x7 slot.. suddenly.. it works! O M G.

After that I tried all combination on my NEW PC, nothing. Any idea? Could try that connector but maybe its something with card itself or its too loose?

Ah! That's it I always thought it needed a x7 slot ;D

Seriously the card worked ok when you tried it in an x8 slot? So did you install the card or just mean it was recognised? Sounds to me like the card is slightly faulty and I would suspect the length of the edge connector that fits into the slot. Maybe slightly on the short side? :-\
