specs:
Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2
Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 i5 Memory Kit CL8(8-8-8-24) 1.65V
XFX HD 5770
Corsair 650W TX Series PSU

hi, my pc wont boot.when powering up the case fans, cpu fan, graphics card and hd spin then stop almost immediately then tries to boot up again. This sytem has been stable for about 7 months with no new additions and i have a surge protector. The pc was running overnight while i was downloading, in the morning it had black screen and unresponsive so had to power down at the wall reboot and has been stuck in boot loop since
What i have tried
remove memory and try only 1 at a time
disconnected all the hard drives, try to start pc, reconnect them and then power up again
remove the battery and clear cmos
try boot machine up without graphics card in
tried a power supply from another pc,still the same
booted another pc up using the power supply from my pc.psu seems ok.
power down holding button in till it wont boot, remove all usbs, switch off power supply, clear cmos and rebbot
I'm wondering if its the processer or motherboard but i dont have another processer ,to rule the processer out. its a i5 2.66(mildly overclocked it to 2.9) and the motherboard is a gigabyte ga p55m ud2 and they are both about 7 months old. I dont think the processer ran much over 50 degrees when gaming as it had an after artic cooling freezer 7 pro on the processer.
is there any way i can find out whether or not it is the the board or processer giving me the problem?

Hi and welcome to the forum. You seem to be in a bad place. You have done all the normal things I would have advised already. As you say it would seem to be either the CPU or the motherboard, problem is neither is easy to determine. Have you got a buzzer attached?

Right well do that and then post back or even buy one only a matter of pence and very useful anyway. I take it that you replaced the thermal compound? Also to save yourself time I would apply for an RMA  now so if we can't sort it you can send it straight off.

Can you try another graphics card or try that graphics card in another computer.? trying to boot up without a graphics card in is not a good test as the board needs a graphics card in to boot.

Whilst you are correct Peter in what you say the board will try and boot without the GFX card and will emit a beep code to let you know that it has stopped because of the missing card. So it can still be a useful tool in determining the problem.

OK then disconnect your PSU and test it. The easiest way is shown on this video.

This is to test the PSU not really the graphics card and the OP said the PSU was tested in another system.

Yes I know Peter but you have to start somewhere and the beginning is always good. I don't like to make any assumptions as I have been caught out before.

Mostly only happens when the OP lies about what was tested. ;D

attached the speaker and i get no beeps whatsoever.
Is the speaker in the right way? with the card or ram out do you get any beeps?

Normally when a PSU goes pop (lets say it did that and that was the reason why your system does not start)  it does not go pop a second time...and you said “booted another pc up using the power supply from my pc.psu seems ok.”....so much for that video but hey just say to Corsair you tested the PSU like in their video and you should get a new one. :D

Sounds like the PSU was faulty then.Just lucky your system wasn't connected to it when it blew. :o
Now Peter can you see why I ask to start from the beginning ;)
As Peter quite rightly said though, you tested it out properly and should RMA it.
