Can you take any macro photos for us to look at? Also can you check you new motherboard model number as it is not recognised by the Gigabyte system?

Hi there,

don't know what DM is on as I found your Mobo without any real problems. Most probably not relevant at the moment but which revision No. is it?

The AM3 CPU's are normally pretty easy to fit, as you say, line up the corect corner and drop it in. However, when you remove a CPU from a Mobo it is possible to accidentally bend 1 or 2 of the pins. (I know, because I have done this myself) This can stop the CPU from dropping in cleanly when you offer it up to the socket again. And, the pins do not have to be badly out of alignment to cause a problem either.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Back to the serious stuff for a moment.

cookiebun:
The CPU socket should look like this:

If you do have any extra bits of plastic or other obstructions on the socket then I would suggest that you RMA the board. If the socket on your Mobo looks like this then look at the CPU, to check that the pins haven't been bent out of position.

PLease don't take this the wrong way but I take it that you haven't had a lot of experience in building machines. If that is so make sure that you have the CPU aligned properly with the socket. Pin1 to the marked corner. Also that you have lifted the lever first.

Hi all as i said I had no problems istalling it on the 790 mobo and i tried an athlon 64x2 Dual core chip on 790 and it aligned no problems but on the 890 it wobled as id ther was something in the middle stoping it from going down, now the bad news i tried the quad core on the 890 and applied very little pressure and it went in but when i lifted it of i noticed one of the pins had broken of. ooops  trying to get some photos of the mobo.

Hi sorry about the quality used phone as batteries for camera dead, if you look close in the centre you can see a rectangle running from left to right that is the ridge that what the chips were wobbling on and it isn't on the 790 mobo

Well it is a bit difficult to make out but I do see what you mean. It certainly doesn't look right. RMA the board and claim for the broken processor while you are at it ;)

That definitely doesn't look right to me and I've seen a lot of AMD sockets.

As DM said yesterday, RMA the board and see what they will do about your damaged CPU as well.
