M720-US3 440X3 Beeps on startup 1 out of 5 times with OC
« on: September 28, 2010, 08:23:45 pm »
I've overclocked my CPU in bios, and the system is completely stable. I've had no problems with it. 4 out of 5 times it starts up fine. 1 out of 5 times, there is about 4 long beeps, the PC restarts and a message comes up saying something about the over-clock setting being reset and that I have to go into bios or continue. So I go into bios, change nothing, exit, and it works fine.

Details of system:

CPU AMD X3 440
Motherboard: M720-US3 (default bios, not flashed / upgraded)
RAM: OCZ Reaper 1066 2x 2gig (4gig 2 modules)
GPU: HD 4850, 512
PSU: OCZ StealthXStream 600W

Details of Bios OC settings:

FSB: 235, OC = 3515.5 MHz 3000 is default
Ram voltage, 2.1 volts as default for the ram
CPU voltage 1.424
HT link +0.1 volts 2109.4 Mhz
Ram timings: 5,5,5,15,24
FSB:DRAM 1:2
Cool and quiet is off
OS is set to high performance, max power

If more info is needed I can repost with it.

Thanks...

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The beeps you are hearing could be continuous beeps that are cut short by the system rebooting. In which case it would mean a power error. It could be that there is something wrong with the PSU, the cables or even that to much power was being drawn by something. So I would advise checking this area first.
Failing that I would say reset everything to standard levels and see if the probelm still occurs.

Hey thanks for the reply.

When the bios is on default i don't have any error messages. Being that the error message points out my overclock, I don't think it's the PSU. Mainly because the increase in voltage from the overclock is minimal extra demand on the PSU. Also it wouldn't explain how the error only occurs now and then. Note the system is completely stable when I'm using it.

I understand what you are saying but sometimes these things have a funny way of showing themselves. Anyway I notice you are still on the standard BIOS so the first thing would be to update that to the newest version. Make sure that you use QFlash not @BIOS as it is more reliable that trying through the OS. Clear the DMI whilst you are there. Then clear the CMOS and load optimised defaults for the new BIOS. When you have flashed it post back.

One more thing have you unlocked any of the cores that were locked?

Flashing the BIOS does sound like a reasonable solution to this kind of problem. I'll have to do some reading about BIOS updates as I've never done one before and have heard they can go wrong and leave you without a board.

I haven't unlocked the 4th core. Ironically I think that would need a BIOS update.

Flashing is risky especially if you don't do it correctly. If you use QFlash, a USB pendrive and follow the instructions it is relativley easy and safe. I would suggest reading through our FAQ guide here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2441.0.html and then following the guidelines do the deed. If you need any more help we will be here.

According to http://gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=3006 if  your cpu is rev C3 is supported with the latest bios for the mobo and that is F7K. So if you say that your bios had never been flashed before, if you want proper support for your cpu you must upgrade it.
