GA-EP45-DQ6 Bios freezing/ No booting
« on: August 17, 2010, 02:51:02 pm »
Recently I got a new desk and low and behold after installing it my HDMI cable wasn't long enough to have the monitor in the middle of my desk and still be connected to the tower. So I have my 1m HDMI cable connected to my tower and the monitor off to the side while i get a longer one. I purchase a 2m HDMI cable and replace the longer one and suddenly i have problems with my computer booting.

I change it back to the old cable but still seem to have the same problems, so i switch it back to the new cable. I try clearing the cmos however we still have problems booting. I take all of the components out, reseat them and try again, still problems booting. I take everything out that i don't need, all bar 1 hard drive, the keyboard the monitor and power cable, still nothing. I take the battery out of the motherboard for an hour, leave the power disconnected and turned off and still we have problems booting. I have tried the pc on different power points as well. I am kinda at a loss to what else i can do to see if i can fix this problem.

When i say "problems booting" i mean that the pc will either get power to it, keep power for 3-4 seconds, then reboot over and over. Or it will boot, i can get into the bios and after 10-15 seconds the computer will freeze and i wont be able to change anything or move the selection in the bios at all and need to restart for anything to happen.

Motherboard: GA-EP45-DQ6 with latest F12 Bios
CPU: Q6600, stock frequencies and voltages
Ram: OCZ Reaper 1066 @ stock frequencies and voltages
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 750watt modular PSU
GPU: XFX 5870 stock edition
CPU cooler: Zalman CNPS9700LED
Case: Thermaltake Armor+ MX
Cooling: 120mm exhaust fan, 230mm side fan, 80mm intake fan

Both HDMI cables were purchased from the same place and both have been confirmed to have been working, This sounds to me like the Motherboard is having problems, anyone else able to confirm this

Well my first thought would be the RAM, even though you are running it at stock speed. Also try using an ordinary lead for the monitor just to rule that possibity out. Can you post the exact part number of the memory please?

Ok have now tried using a normal dvi lead, another HDMI cable, have tried a bfg 8800gtx oc2 and a 4870,  and have swapped out a new power supply to a brand new Toughpower XT 875watt model. Same thing. I have tried all four slots with Kingston hyperX KHX6400D2LLK22/2G, GSKILL F2-6400PHU2-1GBNR, OCZ-2RPR10664GK  and corsair dominator XMS2-8500C5DF. All of these parts have been confirmed to be working in other computers, just not on mine. Maybe the motherboard is the problem?

All from a cable that was too short :o
Well you seem to have checked out most of the components since we spoke last and still have a problem. I does look like either the motherboard or CPU doesn't it. I would suggest removing the motherboard from the case and starting to build it up on the desktop. Lay it on a piece of cardboard or something similar and connect just the CPU/heatsink/fan, buzzer, and PSU. Next try and POST and see what beeps the system makes. Then post back.

So just for reference, I  RA'ed the board and got supplied with a new one of the same model. This seems to be working fairly well now.
