X58A-UD3R Q-Flash problem

X58A-UD3R Q-Flash problem
« on: September 19, 2010, 11:12:00 am »
Hi All.
I've just built my new PC and whilst I wasn't (honest) going to update the FA BIOS to FB, I just wanted to check out the process and that I knew how it worked. I haven't even installed any O/S yet just the hardware assemble.
Everything works fine, except that the QFlash doesn't see my USB, only a Floppy Drive, which I don't have and didn't plan to buy (my previous MB an ASUS, worked straight from the USB at this point).
Should it see my USB please?

Motherboard is GA-X58A-UD3R Rev 2.0

Thanks,

Andy.

Hi and welcome to the forum. This is really in the wrong section and I will get it moved.

Yes it should provisionally. The USB driver must be formatted in a FAT 16 or 32 type. Also in  the BIOS you need to make sure that USB Legacy devices and USB Storage is enabled. It would also be worth disabling the floppy drive if you don't have one. After that insert the USB drive with the BIOS files on( there should be three) and then reboot and go into the BIOS again and make sure that the option to Boot from USB is set. This will only show up if you have a USB drive inserted on booting for the BIOS to find. One thing to note is that the drive might show up as a hard drive under the QFlash utility.

WOW!!! Talk about high speed response!!! AND on a Sunday!
THANK YOU!!!
Firstly apologies for posting in the wrong section.  :-[
I had seen the comment by absic115 about FAT32 and formatted accordingly. I've just checked the BIOS settings and besides Integated Peripherals > USB Storage Function > Enabled (by default) = Enable Legacy Support of USB USB (yes it says it twice) Mass Storage, I can't see any other Legacy USB settings except those for the Legacy USB keyboard and mouse.
If I look in Advanced BIOS Features > Hard Disk Boot Priority it says 1. SCSI-0   2. USB-HDD0   so I assume this means it can see the USB stick?
Apologies if I'm missing something obvious.
Thanks
Andy.

We do our best to help whenever it is needed and that isn't always on a weekday.

I am not sure because I don't know what hardware you have installed but it is quite possibly the second option that you listed. As I mentioned before it can show up as a HDD.

Usually a USB stick will show up as USB-HDD in QFlash. Sometimes it will have a numebr and sometimes, just to make things interesting and depending which motherboard you have, it won't.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

The only thing showing up in the QFlash is Floppy A.

You were supposed to have disabled that! Did you check to see if that was the USB drive?

Sorry. With the Floppy disabled the QFlash says "no drive detected". If I hit "Enter" to try using the Floppy it says "unable to access drive".

Well the good news is you are not the first one to have this problem. Absic and I have tried several times recently to sort this out to no avail. There is no apparent reason why it should not be working. I have just PMed our other guru to see if he can help so please bare with us.

Right well I have just had a reply back form Lsdmeasap and he confirms our thoughts on the requirements as already posted. The only thing he could add was this:

"What I have found is that "Some" USB Sticks just DO NOT work at ALL, not sure why.   I have two 2GB Sticks directly from Gigabyte, one works with Qflash and one does not.

I have also found that the larger ones, 2GB + have a better chance of failing, so it's best to use the smaller sticks especially with Qflash, I've never had any issues with 128MB-1GB sticks and I've used tons of them without issue."

I am not sure if it will help you at all but worth trying in my opinion.

Of course try other USB sticks! Why didn't I think of that?  :-[
Mine is a 1Gb, brand unknown and doesn't work. Tried a 4Gb brand unknown and BINGO! Worked first time. ;D
I'm willing to bet it's a timing issue, anyway one for the developers to work on. Could I suggest you add this to your BIOS "sticky" notes?
I'm a great fan of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and I'm heeding the warning about not upgrading BIOS unless you have to; so does FB fix and huge FA issues please? Unless you recommend it I'll stay on FA for now.
Thank you for your patience, effort and prompt responses, GREAT!!!
I'll recommend you to all my workmates!
Thanks again,

Andy.

You're very welcome Andy and glad to help. I have just looked at the BIOS update and I don't think there is anything there that will worry you but it's something you can do any time. Heres the link if you need it:

Nice to see you found one that worked!

I am not sure what the issue is with certain USB Sticks, but I assume it's probably the same as with certain Memory.   Compatibility with either said product needs to be added to the BIOS is all.
