GV-R587UD-1GD BSOD/Overheating

Hello everyone

I have 2x GV-R587UD-1GD in crossfire and I have the following problem(s)

lower card (secondary for crossfire) runs idle at 47C, upper card 57C
Running furmark for no more than 10 minutes will cause the upper cards temp to go up to 92C and soon after the screen to go black and monitor go in standby as if it would receive no signal

Trying both cards stand alone run within nominal temps both in idle and load conditions. It is quite obvious that this specific card model leaves almost no room for the upper cards fans to suck in air as it's so close to the board of the lower card (slave card/secondary x-fire card)

There're 3D games that I can play for hours and others that will make the screen go black in about 10-15 minutes like Just cause 2. By the way when I get the black screen the only solution is press reset

MB: Asus P6X58D Premium, Mem: 12GB Corsair 6x2 DIMMS (no XMP profile), PSU: Corsair HX100W, CPU: i7 920 (factory speed settings), Sound: Asus xonar X2D, OS: Win 7 64bit, ATI 10.9 (tried 10.8 and 10.7)

Hi and welcome to the forum.
You haven't said what case you have them in or how good the cooling in the case is so I can't comment on that side of things. Have you tried swapping the cards over because some cards do tend to run hotter than others.  The other thing of course is does your motherboard have any other slot to put your graphics card in to give a bit of space between them?

The case is a Coolermaster 690 II Adv with added fans on top, front and on the side panel to assist the airflow towards the graphic cards.

Yes I did try swapping the two cards and the results were identical regarding the temps and as for the slot, if I use the other slot (PCI-X 3) for the second card it will work on x1 speed. Unfortunately according to Intel specs only the first two PCI-X (PCIEX1 and PICEX2) can provide x16 speed. Using PCIEX1 and PCIEX3 instead will make the first card work in x16 mode and the secondary in x1 mode.

Forgot to mention that even if I wanted to use the third slot (PCIEX3) I couldn't, you see right below is the the PSU and the space left on that slot is only for a single bracket card (darn)

I've thought about it too but it seemed a bit ridiculous that I'd have to go down this path when using stock speeds. It seems to me that Gigabyte didn't have crossfire in mind for this card model

Actually I think that your problem lies with your motherboard and the way the slots are configured. They are described as 3 x16 PCIE slots but if in effect they can only be used for two cards then that is not really correct.
The Gigabyte cards are of a standard size as is called for.
The option of watercooling is not such a big deal and even if you only used it for your graphics cards you would notice a big improvement all round as the temperature inside your case would drop also.

After playing around with both cards xfire and solo using different firmware versions I realised that as soon as I updated the card with the F8 version it rendered the card almost useless, I'm talking about black screen way before windows was loaded, sometimes I would get a black screen while still on the POST screen. As soon as I downgrade to F7 version the card would work again (though the temps are still the same)

Have any of you guys have tried the new F8 firmware upgrade for the GV-R587UD-1GD card?

I have a look at the clock and voltage settings with RBE and the differences in F7 and F8 are quite different to be honest
