OK, I got my new board yesterday and now I still have no HDMI or DVI, but VGA works fine.  Could it be the CPU?  I thought the motherboard controlled the vga/dvi/hdmi stuff?  maybe not.

No the graphics are controlled by the CPU. You have to have a CPU with integrated graphics to enable the onboard graphics to work.

Yes, I understand the CPU has to have a graphics chip on it, and it does.  I have the i5 655K.

The problem is, the video only works on the VGA, but not on the DVI or HDMI.  Is this part on the video or on the motherboard as the ports are on the motherboard.  Logic would seem to be if VGA works, then the CPU is good as the graphics work, and the MB has issues with the DVI and HDMI ports.  But maybe not?

Yes, I would tend to agree with you on that point. Even though there are differences if the CPU is outputting video then I think it is more likely that the motherboard or at least the drivers are the problem.

I'll be!  It is my stupid 1080p monitor.  It is going to sleep and the Intel HD video isn't waking it up.  I forgot to turn on the monitor before starting the computer and when I did, the video was working.  On reboot it worked.  but on cold boot it would not work.

I guess the restart is fast enough to not let the monitor sleep.  But power on is too slow and monitor goes to sleep but the Intel video isn't sending a wake signal properly or something.

whew, and I was getting ready to call Intel for an rma. lol  boy do I feel foolish.

Thanks for all your help.

ps. there isn't by chance a bios setting for this hdmi wake up?
