x58a ud3r wont go 1mhz above 166mhz

my board overclocked to 4ghz in the past, but today it wouldnt post and after a reset it came up saying it was due to the overclock. so i thought ok maybe the lower cpu voltage setting i was trying out was the cause, so set it higher (1.35v). then it starts post looping until i reset the cmos  . so i tried a lower fsb and found it wont post at even 1-2 mhz above 166mhz? is the mb buggered?

Hi
I would advise that you go back to the basics first. Clear the CMOS and load BIOS optimised settings. Then run Memtest86+ on each memory module seperately for a few loops and see if everthing goes without a hitch. If it does then try stress testing and see if it holds up. Basically prove the system on default speeds.

i tested them separately when i first bought them, but like you say i should retest them. so ive tested them as a triple channel set, and they check out ok. now ive found if i run easytune 6 and gently increase the fsb 1mhz at a time i can get all the way upto 188mhz. so it would appear that the bios is at fault somehow. is there a kind of safe mode the bios can get stuck on even if the cmos is cleared?

No there isn't. Have you disabled the turbo mode etc in the BIOS?
