[GV-N460OC-1GI] Driver Stopped Responding
« on: October 22, 2010, 10:15:23 pm »
Hi, my buddy got a new card, Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB OC.

Ever since he has been playing games on it, it crashes all the time with the display driver stopped responding error. The card is completely at stock and the fan is on 100% - temps never reach 60c.

I have tried the latest WHQL and Beta drivers and they all do the same thing. I thought that it was a bad card, however it has been running MSI Kombuster with max settings for about 7+ hours now. If it was a bad card, it would have surely crashed?

He is running it on a Seasonic 600w PSU with an AMD Athlon II X4, so I am presuming there is no problem with the power supply as it has plenty of amps.

Running on the latest BIOS version.

The card has been running for almost 5 hours on furmark max settings and it's been fine. But when I open up a game or something, the driver will stop responding when in a main menu.

Cheers.

Updated: RMA have got back to me and have said the card is fine. Played Crysis for 3 hours and ran Heaven benchmark for the rest of the day. I have no idea what it could be!

PSU has 36amps on the 12v so I would not imagine that would have been the problem.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.
The problem is  your PSU. It is far too small. ;) You need a single 12V rail of 850W at least.

Yes that's the GPU, if you check the motherboard manual it will tell you it needs a 500W PSU or more depending on the board. ;) Often too it's not just the power output it is how it is transferred. A lot of PSUs use a multi rail approach and that often causes problems.

Specs say that the card consumes no more than 190w on full load. Leaving 410w for the rest of the system which is more than adequate.

http://www.legionhardware.com/articles_pages/gigabyte_gv_n460oc_1gi_geforce_gtx_460,12.html

This review uses hardware

Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition (Overclocked @ 3.70GHz)
- x3 2GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 (CAS 9-9-9-24)
- Seagate 500GB 7200-RPM (Serial ATA300)
- Asus P6T Deluxe (Intel X58)

And it uses no more than 303w for the whole system on full load.

So you think that 600W - 450W = 150W to run your motherboard, CPU, drives memory and fans etc :-\

The card does not use 450w at all. Please refer to my previous post.
