GA-P55A-UD£: F12 key doesn't show boot menu
« on: October 25, 2010, 02:04:19 pm »
Hi all

I've recently built a system using a Giga-byte GA-P55A-UD3 v2.0 board.
However, no matter what I do, I cannot access the manual boot menu by pressing F12 during BIOS POST. I've tried using a keyboard via a KVM, as well as one plgged directly in to the box. I've tried the USB ports on the front of the case, and also the USB ports on the MoBo.

Pressing the Delete key works as expected.

I then updated the BIOS from F9 to F11 using @BIOS, and that made no difference.

Full specs of the system are as follows:

  • GA-P55A-UD3 v2.0
  • intel i7-860
  • Corsair 500W CX PSU
  • Crucial 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz Ballistix Memory Kit CL8(8-8-8-24) - BL2KIT25664BN1608
  • Antec 300 case
  • WD Caviar Black SATA6 640Gb HDD

Any help appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.
Your problem is that you have a USB keyboard and you probably haven't enabled the Legacy USB Devices in the BIOS. Hence it would work in Windows but not in a DOS environment.

Thanks for that, I'll try that later when I get home. Do you know where that is in the BIOS?

Any ideas why does F12 not work, but Delete does?

Normally it is in Integrated Peripherals. If you want to boot from a USB drive ever you will also need to enable Legacy USB Storage as well.
Why F12 doesn't work but Del does I really don't know unless it is a keyboard problem. What keyboard are you using?

Hi,

If your keyboard is like my Microsoft one, the F keys are doubled up with other functions. When booting the PC the keyboard doesn't recognise the F Keys unless you enable the F Lock key. On my system, if I have switched the F Keys off and I re-boot, I can press any of the F keys until the cows come home and they won't work.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

I don't think it's keyboard related as I have two different keyboards, and they both behave the same way.

One does have the doubled up F-Keys, but the other is just a basic Dell USB keyboard. I'll try them both again tonight after updating the BIOS.

Hi guys

Legacy USB Devices is already enabled, as is Legacy USB Storage.
F8 works, Delete works, but not F12. Anything else I can check?

There is nothing else that springs to mind to be honest. There is nothing in the BIOS to control this function as far as I know. Maybe you will have to try GGTS and see if they have an answer.

OK, so that was the answer!!   :-[
For some reason, F8 etc work irrespective of whether or not the function lock key is pressed. F12 is different for some reason.
I have no idea why the plain, simple keyboard didn't work, but my main keyboard is now working.

Thanks for the help guys.

You are welcome. I must admit to being as much in the dark about the answer as you but at least we got there. ;)
