GA-MA78GM-S2H ver 11 BIOS -- Will More Memory Help
« on: November 01, 2010, 02:06:51 am »
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on this MB.  I currently have 4 GB of memory installed.  Will I see any meaningful improvement in speed by adding 4 more GB of memory?

That depends on what you use or plan to use the PC for. If your not a hard core gamer and do not work with large image or large AV files I doubt you will see any difference at this point in time. It never hurts to have more memory as memory requirements will only increase in the future.

I do manipulate photographic images in Photoshop.  I'm not sure what you consider large but they often range between 35 and 60 megabytes.  One reason I asked, I added one of these gadgets to my desktop that shows memory usage and it often shows 50% usage when I'm not in Photoshop.

But, by then I'll probably have another MB which will need a different kind of memory.

Photoshop can use large amounts of ram for undo functions. If you have a new enough version of Photoshop that supports more than 4 gigs of ram more ram will improve performance if you are having slowdowns or loss of undo functions.

Thanks.  I currently use CS4.  Do you know if it can make use of more than four GB?

Hi,

If I remember correctly Photoshop in CS4 is still 32 Bit so you won't gain from increasing your RAM. CS5 has a 64 bit version of Photoshop and this allows you to use more RAM. Using more RAM in Photoshop or other 64 Bit Programmes does help things along. For example, rendering an image in Photoshop that used to take several minutes when I had 4 GB of RAM now takes seconds.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.
