M61P-S3 upgrade problem, not accepting newer chip
« on: January 08, 2011, 09:31:51 pm »
Hi,

So I recently picked up an AMD Phenom II x2 555, and wanted to pop it into my M61P-S3 board. I checked the gigabyte website, and it says that this board supports the processor since the F7I bios. So, I download the bios, put it on a disk, flash the bios, reboot, check everything is working fine, POST runs great, boot up windows, run CPUZ, Bios Rev F7I.
Great, everything seems to be a-ok.

So I open her up, remove the HSF, pop out the old Athlon, pop in the new phenom, put on the new HSF, and prepare myself for the fun of an upgraded system...

But when I hit the power button, nothing. No POST, no beeps, nothing. The fans all power up, the HDs spin up, but aside from that, nothing at all.
Did I muck up I wonder? I pop out the new HSF, the new CPU, put the old CPU back in, the old HSF back on, power up, everything works perfectly fine. I reset the BIOS to total default, do the usual swaparoo, again, no post, no beeps, nothing.

Am I missing some step or some common error? Or is the new beta bios just failing me?

I see the new BIOS supports the CPU. Are you reapplying any thermal compound or thermal pad when you reinstall the heatsink? Did you clear the CMOS?

Have you made sure that you have inserted the EATX 12v connector near the CPU?

What PSU are you using?

Hi all,

I appreciate much the suggestions and offers of help.

After swapping between the two chips, it turned out that booting with CLR_CMOS fixed the problem for whatever reason, so thanks for that :)

running very smooth now, yay. OCing smooth even.
