A single eSATA/USB cable can now power up an eSATA/USB capable device as compared to the original eSATA device which requires an external power source. Older eSATA devices will still need an external power source.

1) GA-Z97X-Gaming 7, G3258,
2) GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev. 1.1, FX-8350
3) GA-AM1M-S2P, Sempron 3850 Kabini

As Tiger has said the older style drives cannot be powered from the new style ports and will still need an external power source.

Well actually we were talking about enclosures to be precise not drives themselves. Should have made it clear, sorry.

So what do you have connected to the SATA power connection on the drive?

Oh I see, that should work then. What USB port are you connecting it to?

Can you try the cable attached to another computer?

Hi there,

I have this motherboard but can't find out if the e-SATA ports actually supply power like the USB ports do. I have asked Gigabyte about this and will post back as soon as I have an answer for you.

this is the blurb on gigabyte for the connections
"eSATA/USB combo
eSATA/USB combo ports provides significant convenience by supporting eSATA and USB devices in one port, and requires no additional power source when connecting eSATA/USB combo devices through the applicable cable. "
